Knife vs boxcutter vs ??

Quick update. Got the dual blade in a couple days ago. Found the Gerber (Lite model) on the shelf at Walmart for a couple bucks less than Amazon. Also found they had a black model for $1 less than that.

Decided to grab one of the black Gerbers, leave the blade it in, and swap the utility blade from the other knife to a hook version. Gives me multiple options depending on the need at the moment. The two blade knife is fairly heavy. The Gerber isn’t even noticeable.

Going a bit zombie thread.

But I didn’t see it until today:rolleyes:

I used to do the same thing (interstate sweeping) so I wanted to add my experience.

I kept a bag of tools as well. But on my person. My usual edc knife which wasn’t used for work. The old school aluminum body Stanley box cutter. 2 packs at Lowe’s for 6 bucks.

Yeah, you need a screw driver to change blades but the folders and quick change styles flex around too much and eventually won’t hold blades. Whereas the old school and cheap Stanley works good til I lose it.

Plus slip it into a pocket. It’s nice and smooth without much bulk so I never notice it even while digging for something else in that pocket.

I also found that a full serrated blade works great to get the trash wound around the brushes/spindles out. Since the teeth grab, a “rip and pull” motion can be used efficiently, helping pull loose material away while cutting instead of having to try to bear against it to cut. Also does good at popping loose/through the small gauge steel wire belts from blown tires that get in there.

I like the super cheap, thick bladed ones you find at the gas station. The extra material at the teeth which make for a useless knife generally, hold up to the rip, pull abuse quite well.

I also kept a good pair of diagonal cutters in a back pocket.

:)

If I am working outside around the farm I have taken to carrying my Gerber Flatiron. It's pretty heavy duty, blade sharpens easily and I don't feel bad about using it as a prybar or hammer.
