First off... I'm broke, but want to do something for an AR. I was kicking around Cerakote, but that option went away when the guy from the other forum stopped coating.

going with a Krylon camo job to personalize one of my ARs. Suggestions on how to prep the gun and plastic? Any strong advisers against this idea?

I stuffed a cotton ball in the muzzle device, and over the front sight post, taped the optic on the one, made sure there was no dripping oil.
May have wiped one with a dry cloth.
The one's paint has mostly remained for 7+ years and the other about 4.
Krylon and/or Rustoleum.

Thanks for the info!

I wear surgical gloves when I do prep work and painting so the oils on my fingers don't mess it up. Use a cotton ball or clean rag and use rubbing alcohol to wipe it down. Alcohol evaporates quickly and doesn't damage anything which is why I like it

I plug the muzzle with a QTip or something, tape off optic lenses, and if you don't want paint on the barrel, paper towel tubes work well. I also stuff cotton balls in the mag well.

Rustoleum camo paint works well; matte finish and dries quick. Do light coats, having to
do a few thin coats is better than one heavy coat.

Spray the whole thing down with (non-chlorinated)Break Cleaner to degrease the rifle.
Tape off anything you don't want painted or get paint into.
Practice colors and designs on paper/cardboard until you find something you like...then have at it.

Be very careful with brake clean.....the metal parts you are ok.....some plastics don't like it.....I have used the camo krylon in spray cans with great results.....paint a base color and build off that using textured things to lay the paint on.....cotton balls...waded up paper towels etc.....mix the colors/ use white to lighten and black/grey to darken......let it set a day or so to "cure"......the high spots in the paint will leave residue on your skin for a day or so.....and if you don't like it it doesn't take much to get it off......I had a former friend paint an AR all tan.....it sat for two years plus with the paint on it.....a pressure washer and some purple stuff and it was an evil black rifle again!

Good info. I think Wal-Mart will have a camo spray can set for me. I think this will be a Xmas project.

After being motivated by the last Rattle Can paint job thread, I used the Krylon Camo on my Savage bolt gun. I am no painter but was pleased how it came out. Pretty sure I just wiped it down with a rag, no chemicals. I did a little trial and error on an ammo can to determine what color combo I wanted and was glad I did, as one green is way lighter than the other.
