I recently broke my Schrade large kukri and then, not wanting to waste a good edge, converted it into a camp knife. Here is the original Schrade kukri (stock photo from the internet)
index.php

It broke just past the handle at the narrow neck. So, I cut out a bit of the blade between Schrade logo and the holes to make a handle. Wrapped the handle area with an old leather sling to produce my new camp knife - kukri_knife.jpg

I am not by any means a candidate for Forged in Fire but I think I did ok to make the best of a situation.

Okay, I know y'all have been waiting for this update. I have worked a little more on the kukri blade. I stripped it of the black coating and put a colorful paracord handle on it. Also, ground out the nick in the blade. It is a six inch blade with a 6" handle and cuts very nicely. It is pictured below sitting next to my newest weekend project. I will call it a heavy camp cleaver/hatchet. Made from an old piece of 3/16" thick steel 3" wide by ~20" long. I used a grinder with a cutting blade to shape the handle then a bench grinder to put an edge on it. Why did I do it? IDK, just having a bit of fun. The cleaver blade edge is straight and about 11". Tried to put a flat grind on it but turned out more like the edge of a typical axe. I plan on using it for preparing/batoning kindling and light duty limbing. The handle is made from sisal rope wrap. Oh, I also put a chisel like edge on the flat tip of the blade. It isn't pretty but I think it will work. As the man says "It will cut". If I had the proper tools it would be much more refined and shiny.

Refined and shiny is overrated. They look good. What did you do about heat treatment of the chopper?

Thanks. I didn't do any heat treatment, don't have the proper equipment. Maybe they heat treated the original flat piece of steel when it was first made?

War Eagle! I thought I was the only Auburn fan in NC. I went to school there from 2000 to 2003.

War Eagle! You might still be the only Auburn fan in NC as I am in SC. I went to Auburn from 78 to 82 and have been in SC since I graduated. Used to drive through Auburn once or twice a year when visiting family. Unfortunately I haven't been back in a couple of years now.

And a big thank you for your service to our Country!

Even if they did you probably undid it with the bench grinder. I wouldn't worry about it. That chopperwhacker doesn't really need a fine edge anyhow. Very cool tools BTW!
