Learn me on Whiskey

You might want to try some Crown Royal Black. It is a good choice in sipping whiskey, and would probably be my choice if I had only one.

Gentleman Jack from Jack Daniels is another good one to try.

Some folks like flavored whiskeys, like Crown Apple or Peach. They are not for me.

However, I do like Red Stag from Jim Beam, a Black Cherry liqueur infused with Jim Beam Bourbon. And it's 70 proof so you can sip it a little longer.
My go to favorite is Red Stag mixed half and half with Jim Beam over ice. Excellent sipping drink at the end of the day.....

Lite. Great first post. Just a slight clarification. You referenced smoky Highland whiskeys, I think you meant Islay. That region includes peated whiskeys like Laphroaig, Ardbeg, etc. Highland region whiskeys are like Aberfeldy, Dalmore, Most all “The Glens”, MacCallan etc. and are not peated as a rule.
Thanks for joining the forum and welcome from another Fuquavian.
Yep I don't know what I was thinking. Maybe I was drinking?

I don't drink much Scotch Whisky, but my favorites are all from Lowland and Speyside distilleries because of the lack of the peat flavor. I think for Bourbon drinkers, those regions are more approachable. I tried a tasting of 3 different Islay's recently and I could not get past the peat.

Only recently did I start trying the Lowland expressions and I've enjoyed most of them. Also quite enjoy Japanese Whisky and even Kavalan from Taiwan.

Like firearms, there is so much to explore in the world of Whiskey/Whisky that you can never get board of it don't you think? Yet like Firearms, we always have our favorites that we go back to. I've tried to build up some favorite bottles in each category for my own pleasure as well as being able to have something on hand for most guests.

Surprising to see so many people from the Quay on here. But given that we have one of the best gun shops in the area, and we are blessed with so many great shooting courses and ranges close by, maybe I should not be surprised.

Ardbeg always reminds me of what I imagine licking the sweat off a horse that has wallowed in a peat bog tastes like. Some people love the peat. I prefer a scotch that is a wee bit less peaty.

My Daughter that's going thru Nurse training right now announced to me the other night that I'm applying hand sanitizer incorrectly and then proceeded to show me the correct technique. Then I showed her how I do it. I grabbed my bottle of Woodland Reserve from the garage and poured some into the cup of my hand and said " Thats too much" and I slurped up all I could than rubbed the rest onto my hands. Then said " wait, that not enough, its only 40 % alcohol and its supposed to be at least 65% " So, I did it again. She rolled her eyes and walked away. True story.
I'm a new whisky drinker, I got the Woodland from a secret Santa exchange at work but I like it. I cut it with water to eliminate the harshness and this allows me to appreciate all the different flavors that a whiskey can have and I never use ice since that numbs the taste buds.

I don't do Scotch, I like Gentleman Jack for a bourbon, coming up on the 17th I'll get some Jameson's, but I prefer Canadian. Crown is OK, but expensive. I've samples many brands but found that MacNaughton is the best compromise of taste, smoothness, and price when consumed neat. I'd like to try some American blends and ryes. Any suggestions?

A friend sent me this article which gives the most complete history of MGP juice that I've seen to date.

https://thebourbonculture.com/whiskey-info/mgp-indiana-past-present-and-future/

Looks like you (the OP) are getting into some Bourbon's and eventually someone will tell you that the distillate is made by MGP in Indiana. This upsets some people badly, but I don't care as long as the bottler is honest in the labeling. MGP makes some very fine spirits and many on my favorites list have some or all the juice from MGP.

Pour yourself a double (it's a long article) and sit back and read this article and learn some more about the industry.

Cheers!

Did some time in KY. Of course drank a lot of Bourbon. I used to have all the Horses from the top of the Blanton's bottles. These days on that front we keep the following on hand at all times.

1. Angels Envy
2. Woodford Reserve
3. Blantons

I used to love Pritchards which was technically not Bourbon because it was made in TN but they stopped making it. For mixing and parties we use Kirkland 7 year old small batch which is a 7 year old Beam product.

The wife does not drink Scotch but I do. I prefer less peaty varieties but every now and then like a bit of a bog in a glass. My always on hand for Scotch are:

1. Oban 14
2. Mccallan 12 or 14
3. Kirkland 22 year old which is really cheap for what it is. It is a Speyside. Some people think it is actually Glenlivet.

I have also been enjoying a bit of Uncle Nearst lately. Mainly the 1884 but I did manage to find a bottle of the 1856 yesterday!

Heigold Rabbit Hole might be my favorite right now. Man, this whiskey adventure has been pretty cool. I’ve got 13 bottles mostly empty now.

Lots of good suggestions.

For scotch, you might try Old Pulteney, as well. Their 12 year is about $40 a bottle and it is very good. Not overpowering. You can even taste a bit of sea salt in it, due to their location on the seashore.

Glenlivet is a good one, as has been noted. Glenmorangie has several easy drinking offerings. Balvenie Double Wood is also a really nice one.
I ran into a self- proclaimed Scotch Geek. He told me about Old Pulteney and I had to try it. Hard to find but found some. Good Scotch but I’ll be damned if I could find even a hint of a taste of sea salt. After the 3D bottle I gave up on the search for sea salt and settled for its good taste 😀. If I see a bottle I will pick it up every time.

Jefferson's Ocean
Eagle Rare
Uncle Nearest 1856
Clyde Mays
Knob Creek
Jefferson’s Ocean. I got my mother a bottle of that back in August for her birthday. Fine bourbon, with an after taste of fish.

Great suggestions in this thread. My mother and I (only ones in the in the immediate family) do enjoy a good scotch or bourbon.

That is a wonderful collection of juice! I've tried all but a couple of those. You also have a bottle of a fantastic buget bourbon that I quite enjoy, Henry McKenna. No surprise really since I'm a big fan of Heaven Hill Distilleries.

You have enough bottles to justify building a nice Whiskey library to show them off in. Enjoy!

Most of what I’ve got, not everything since starting this thread.

Have you tried the Virgil Kaine? If so, what did you think?

I do like some ginger, but I found its best to have only a sip or shot of it, then move on to something else.

My Dad loves it, but he's also a one and done drinker.

I drank a bunch of bourbon about 40 years ago. Then a bunch of scotch maybe 30 years ago. And then again recently.

I like Irish now. Jameson Stout Edition in particular. Not pricey either.
Drink regular Jameson's; how does the Stout Edition differ?

Best way I can describe is Jameson is good, the stout edition is incrementally better. Same price. It’s just aged in stout barrels and I’m not necessarily a fan of stout.

Not a big difference in flavor. Just enough that I really like it.

I'll have to try it! I go back and forth usually Jameson's but Hendrick's Gin on some hot evenings sitting outside.

My only piece of advice is don't get caught up in chasing allocated unicorns like Blanton's, E.H. Taylor, Weller, Stagg, etc. - or buying into the "rarity = quality" myth. This is not saying the allocateds are not really good, but there are plenty of sleeper bottles readily available out there on the bottom shelf.

Grab a bottle of Very Old Barton ($13), Benchmark, Ancient Ancient Age 10 or J.T.S. Brown ($16) and give it a try. In the end, everybody's tastes are different and other's suggestions may not meet your flavor/mashbill preference.
After 3 or 4 taste really want matter anymore.......

What matches with a cigar best?
I would recommend this:

I decided to pick up some hooch while I was running other errands (gas is too damn high).

I went to the package store that my old Hardee's boss had owned for a whole buncha years. He had recently sold it.

So, I buy two bottles. The new co-owner rings me up. I pay and leave.

I'm talking to my wife about the day's events and how the other co-owner said one of the other bottles I bought, was above my stated price range. Then it hit me. They only charged me for one bottle of whiskey.

Of the husband and wife team, it was the husband that was trying to recommend a drink, but it was the wife that rang me up.

Long story short, as much as I love free booze, I called them, got a PayPal address, and paid them for the 2nd bottle (gas is too damn high).

I hope hubby doesn't lip-beat her too badly over this.

When did you become so honorable?????? 🤔

I’m not big on the ginger at all.
