Hi all. I’m new to NC as of last year and I didn’t grow up in a hunting home and I don’t know anyone near me that I can learn from. I know there is the hunter safety course the the state puts on, I’m planning on taking that, but it seems more like a safety and laws course (could be wrong about that though). Anyways are there any schools/workshops/classes that anyone can recommend to learn how to responsibly hunt and how to field process the animal? I’m in Asheville and interested in deer hunting. If this is a common post, sorry for the repeat post, I searched the forum and couldn’t find much.

The hunter safety course just covers legalities for the most part.

I'm on the far side of the State from you. You need to find someone local who can mentor you... show you how to process game etc.

You may want to see if you can get copies of the recorded seminars here:

Yes! I am also looking.
In line with the OP's thoughts, not to take away.

I've been hunting before but in NH it was ah, different. Been to a couple of courses to be sure of any differences.
Looking for a hunting bud to either show me the NC idiosyncrasies or to cover my back in Gamelands.
I don't want to take away any from any pre-arranged hunting locations.

I'm currently in the process of getting my son's and myself lifetime licenses and took the online NRA Hunters saftey course about 2 weeks ago. You can currently do everything online to get the course out of the way, but again it's not very in depth. I've been hunting for several years up north but never down here and I second the idea of getting a mentor. That being said, I gutted my first buck in the woods after I watched a YouTube video. It's definitely possible if that's your last resort.

I'm just floating this idea out there, but it looks like we have a group of guys who could easily hunt the South Mountian gamelands together. Might be a little late to plan anything this season though

never hunted, still don't eat meat for almost 30 years. I wouldn't mind going on a hunt. I got no real problem shooting if i know it's going to good use, and i'd probably partner with a church up the road. More just thinking i should give a rifle or two a chance to fulfil their destinies.

I was in your shoes many years ago, it’s going be hard to get started but not impossible. You have many challenges. Try and locate any hunting clubs in your area. Does not have to be Deer specifically, try to find Predator hunting club. Then you can network from there. The toughest problem I found is, where can I hunt? If you have access to private property, you will be way ahead of the game. Don’t just limit yourself to deer, start with something that you can hunt all year round without limits. Pesting. Predator hunting. Every location is different. You can learn a lot from YouTube about processing. You can also buy videos on hunting to learn from.
