Went to leeds rifle range today and this was on the locked gate.

For years this has been coming. People bringing TVs, car parts, and everything else they can find to shoot at and just leave the trash. I'm pissed but not surprised. Looks like I have to try out the range at foothills.

I've only feel safe in a group there for the past several years.
It's got a nice setup, if people would only take care of it.
Guess that is too much to ask of some people.

This is a nation-wide problem. Spot after spot in the western national forests have been closed to shooting due to the trash issue. Every time my friends and I shot in the Los Padre NF we hauled out bags of trash left behind by others. The barbarians overwhelmed us and others cleaning up and the forest areas were closed.

REDNECK SLOBS!!!
Same thing happened years ago at Phillsons Crossroads range....
Stopped by during deer season to double-check zero and found garbage, broken bottles, a CONSOLE TV and a HOT WATER HEATER on the range!!!!!
Trash cans were overturned, and all manner fast-food containers, napkins coffee cups were everywhere. I was pissed.
One guy was using a clothes basket for a target support ( at about 40 yds.)
Another Neanderthal ( who could have passed for an extra in " Deliverance ") was actually walking down range to check his target WHILE RANGE WAS HOT!
The 'short bus' was busy that day....

Or hire a retiree who can act as RSO.
For many years there was a guy, aka the brass man. If you want to keep it you better not let it lay long...
I wonder if it were people trying to film Demo Ranch type YouTube vids, blowing chit up?

They're the ones who'll be shooting in someone's backyard in the middle of a development and proclaim it safe because they are shooting at a stump.

I live close to a couple of mouth breathers like this.

I hate to hear stories like these. Like turds in the punch bowl, they give the left more evidence to support their moot talking points. It reminds me of going to walmart, littered with community bottom feeders vs going to sams where a membership fee is required. Leaving something better than you found it is of good character, any less and you are a user and a parasite.

It's not just "free" ranges. I belong to 2 shooting ranges. One is a club and one is a business. There are some folks that think because they paid money to join they can do whatever they want regardless of the rules. One range has a lengthy vetting process of prospective members including being sponsored by 2 existing members. Half day range safety course with a test. Signed document saying you understand the rules. Eight hour work day cleaning up and repairing stuff that gets shot that should not get shot. And they still break the rules, shoot up everything in sight, will stand under a sign on the firing line that says dont do something and they are doing it. You can't make this s#it up. Truth is stranger than fiction. Mike Nesmith of the Monkees said it best, "Basically, people are just no damn good."

I see crap like this on a regular basis at RCWA and it's done by MEMBERS!! People that have paid a healthy premium to get into that organization just to trash it and leave their trash on the ranges. The BOD always says, "Get their name or tag number and we'll address the issue" but when someone is turned in there isn't any action taken against the offenders, they keep showing up and doing the same crap over and over..

A couple of years ago we had someone shooting the lights over the skeet fields. A camera was finally set up and who was the culprit?? A member, surprise, surprise!! That may be the only person I've ever seen have their membership revoked....

I would get there at sunrise to be by myself. This guy would ALWAYS show up five minutes after the first round and ruin my alone time. Hated that guy.

I was there before day break one weekday and he said, "the state guys" are supposed to be there to cut the grass that morning and wouldn't even let me set up my gear. I really wanted to challenge his ah thor i ti, but decided against it that day, and just made small talk for an hour or so. They never showed and he "let" me set up...

Well this the reason I would never want a range nazi out there. What will happen is the state employees and their friends will use it privately.

I find it so funny as i read the comments.
  • They need a good RSO
  • No range nazi's
  • People have no respect
  • Just follow the rules
No one can find the proper ballance of a state ran facility.

What i have found that always works is make it a economic choice.

If a gun club has a steep entry fee the cost separates the customers. If one is not willing to pay x and you are, you get to spend time with people who are filtered out.

Just because someone has money doesn't mean that they aren't slobs and will take care of things.

Never implied that.

What I am implying is if one has bought into a club, the odds are very low that they will be shooting up TV's and being a slob.

Says range will be kept closed till a group of volunteers step forward to help clean it up.
Perhaps a.group of people that have shot there free will step forward.
Perhaps just consider it range dues for all the free shooting time they've gotten.
I know the range I belong to has a clean up day.
It sucks to have to clean up someone else's mess, but it seems its going to be the the price to continue to shoot, that or pay a few hundred to join a private range easier in my area to do than in the more populated areas where there are waiting list to join.

Probably a call or two to your most proactive US Rep. to get the Forest Service off their ass and come up with a plan to maintain the public service ranges. They do have a plan to clean the shithouses and with a little thinking they can provide a cleanup service; plenty of folks seeking amnesty with nothing to do, plenty of convicts that need a day in the open spaces, etc.

Uwharrie got out of hand before they shut it down to rebuild. Some of the things people do...…. I will never understand.

Over the years I have utilized each of the ranges listed in Enoree Ranger district and have encountered similar problems at these ranges at various times. Trash, folks not retrieving targets, and lack of range safety were all common violations. The state simply does not have the budget or manpower to stay on top of this situation. This is a matter of policeing oneself, and taking personal responsibility. If folks insist on continuing this type of flagrant disregard for property the remaining ranges will doubtless suffer a similar fate.
Someone once said the definition of character is doing what's right when NO ONE is looking....

I’ve noticed the range in Caswell has degraded as well from people not retrieving targets and breaking the boards on the target stands.

Similar happened to one of the two public ranges near Charleston. We made it a habit to always take more than our "trash" with us when we left and encouraged other shooters to do the same. State ended up closing it - and it was looking more like a landfill than a shooting range last time we were there.

It was re-opened later. With newly instituted fees to shoot there. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd606614.pdf
