I'm in need of a recommendation for an OWB holster that provides some sort of Level 2 retention. I have the standard Gould and Goodrich leather pancake, but am interested in either a paddle or a kydex holster with thumb break. I've really only come across the Comp-Tac Flatline, KT-Mech Akela Duty, and Alien Gear that provides this. Unfortunately the Flatline is only available for Glock atm.

Any ideas, or should I just stick to the leather?

Have you ever used a safariland with the ALS? It is my duty holster and probably one of the best holsters I’ve ever used for retention.

Yes I have a fair bit, but it was the Level III. Never quite sure if I liked it or not.

Looking at Level II... this one?

That's the one. That holster is awesome. I wish they had an iwb version too. They have the gls but the AlS thumb system is way better imo

Safariland also has a kydex holster with GLS (versus ALS). My son ran one in a match and really like it.

Okay, so we solved the OWB issue.

Are there any IWB options that offer Level II ? Even though it's concealed, Level II is still required.

Level II IWB? Are lawyers writing your carry rules? That's going to be a much harder thing to find with fewer options. It's a totally different market that does not require that kind of retention normally. Not to mention some of the retention methods will be much more complicated if not defeated by IWB carry. Are they trying to get you killed?

Just to throw a different idea out, sometimes I work in plain clothes while on duty, I can easily conceal a safariland paddle holster with ALS along with handcuffs and an extra magazine under an unbuttoned shirt. Sometimes I’ll even carry off duty this way, doesn’t always require IWB to be concealed.

To the first question, probably. To the second, it's probably not the end goal but they often seem to make it easier. ;)

I don't understand it either, just the way it is.

So the ALS does a good job of concealing? Mine hasn't come in yet. Do you recommend the paddle over the belt slide? I felt the belt slide would keep it closer to the waist than the paddle.

Depends on the gun, I’m carrying a full size m&p .40 and you can’t really tell I’m carrying. With something smaller I imagine it would conceal better.

What's a thumb breaker?:D

Safariland make a gls that they have a iwb holster for. I haven't tried it personally but some love it also, I too can carry my Als owb with a large tshirt and it seems fine. I preferred the paddle holster back because it rides higher I found for me than the belt loop option. Ymmv
