I am proud of him and his life choice. Up until now he's kinda wandered through life without direction, I hope he finds himself during his time in the armed forces.

Anyway, I want to get him a gift, not having served myself, I don't know what he can take or use that wont be provided for him. I would like to get yall's advice on a nice gift for him. Something useful and not just something hell have to haul around and worry about losing since he will be at like 5 bases in the next year or so.

Thanks in advance.

I was in college (19) but I completely lacked direction. Joining the Army really did a lot for me.

The most meaningful thing I have is a coin from my dad that he carried on his tags in Vietnam. It's a quarter that the eagle was very precisely cut out (I'll take a picture later) and it fit on a dogtag chain. I still have it on mine. Of course, I didn't wear it there during basic training, but otherwise, I had it especially during deployments.

The only other thing that has lasted as long is an assault pack/3 day pack that I've taken on every deployment, every TDY trip, everything. It's got more combat time and flyer miles than most people ever will. Maybe something like that which will be useful and practical.

he will be training to be a pilot, 1st in san Antonio (which I think @Derek8404 is near), then Washington state, then somewhere near Atlanta, then I cant remember.

For me, it was my shaving kit. I got it when I joined and still use it. It's been around the world a couple of time, in and out of combat zones and still keeps going. My wubbie is probably second.

Yup, I think they do it at Randolph AFB which is here in SA.

not sure yet, he just told me a bit ago that he was accepted and he's leaving for camp sept 29th. he's coming to visit a couple weeks before he's gone for awhile

Let me see...USAF...ah-ha! Get him a universal remote control, pilots go bat shit crazy when they can't get the cable programming to work right! LOL

Seriously...a watch, a really good one, and a solid pocket folder. He will be an officer and can afford whatever "survival" knife he wants when his training is over, so I would not go that route.

They take everything he brings to basic and put it in storage until he finishes basic training. The only exception is toiletries.
Absolutely, under no circumstances should be bring an electric razor to basic.
