I've been mulling the idea of selling fresh channel cats by the lb at the farmers market. Fresh as in "still swimming in a 55gal barrel".

Organic, cruelty free, free range NC catfish. 1.5-2lb.
I could dispatch them when purchased.
Probably use the MKII with sparrow...
Fish in a barrel.

After seeing the condition of whole catfish at the "high end" grocery store, it occured to me that a market exists.
Especially with the Asian and hipster-American customers.

Thoughts?
Would I need to worry about PITA showing up and dumping the barrel in the parking lot...run away catfish- be free!

On Friday I saw a guy at Harbor Freight in Kannapolis driving a truck, selling catfish exactly as you described........fresh up until they were purchased, killed and you clean em.

There are folks that sell their eggs by word of mouth, the same might work. I wouldn’t expect that you sell a lot of fish at the farmer’s market that folks would need to clean themselves.

Not when I can go to Teal's, down by the boat landing and get them already filleted and fried while I wait.

But I'm a fairly lazy guy, so there's that.

Isn't the farmers market a gun free zone?

They don't want to cut down on the target selection for old people in cars I think.

A nail in the noggin will do the same thing the .22 will, is reusable and won’t freak the hippies out. You also wouldn’t have to worry about where the bullet goes with that many potential people around. If I were to do something like you describe I would offer a cleaning service for a small fee.

I'd pay a small fee for it to be gutted on site. I can deal with the rest but gutting I've found is best done outside.

For $5 each they'll be cleaned so your hands still smell lavender/orange/mango fresh.

I would approach seafood restaurants that may see a value in locally sourced products. Places like 1618 Seafood Grill and Southern Lights Bistro in G'boro.

Would beat sitting in the heat at the farmer's market.

I agree with this. Several farm to table restaurants in Durham. Hillsborough BBQ Co. sells NC raised catfish on their menu.

I dont know if they still do it that way or it is even offered/sold that way anymore but my wife's grandfather from Arkansas would never buy or eat a fish that wasnt alive when he bought it.
