I am assuming this is the right place for this. Don't you just love when when you come home from work to find that a home repair is necessary? I got home from work around 4:30 this afternoon and went to the basement to find water pouring from my water heater. So after checking a few things off to interwebs to see who has one in stock locally. First home depot my favorite place. Only thing in stock were some with bad reviews. So I ventured to sLowes website found one with good reviews and made sure it was in stock. I called the wife and had her to meet there with her Lowes card. I told her to check the status since that card is never used. Sure enough cancelled due to inactivity. All is well now and I'm looking forward to a nice warm shower. Thank goodness I didn't work hard today or I may have to call in sick tomorrow.
Let me also add that my wife asked one one of the employees where the hot water heaters were at. I proceeded to explain to her that if the water was already hot we wouldn't need to heat it up

I hear ya.

Not a surprise for me, but I did work till after 8pm today replacing the shower valve cartridge in my remodel that had apparently been freeze-fried for years (only leaked when turned on, so, since that was an unfinished bathroom, it was never turned on).

Fun working late on your proerty! Joys of Home Ownership!!!

I was fortunate. I didnt come home to a basement full of water. I was taking the dog out and heard the leaking. It's like it waited for me to come home then decide to kill over.

i had no idea being a home owner was going to be such a huge pain till I got a house a few years ago! It's just a constant battle....

Yes, but it's your battle!

I may grouse about it, but deep down I know buying it was one of the best decisions of my life.

That said, I also shoveled dirt into a hole outside said house instead of eating dinner at a reasonable hour... :):):), etc.

People say you're throwing money away renting. I say you haven't started throwing money away until you try to keep a house up.

The good thing is that in this market, if you don't love your home, you can stick er....sell it to the next owner. We're in the process of just that. I cringe when I think of all the issues I have fixed that the new owner won't have to worry about since they're fixed the right way (unlike when it was built). However, they better pony up some cash for the HVAC units. They're 27+ years old and darn near on their last legs. Funny thing, my home inspector told me 14 years ago that they were old and on their last legs way....guess we got the good completely out of them ;)

Also, be happy you have a basement. Not sure what the slab owners do if a pipe bursts in the middle of its concrete coffin. I'll never own a slab foundation home. Ever.

They don't climb stairs to get into their houses every day, I know that. And they don't ever crawl under their house to fix a creaky floorboard. And their tile floors always go in nice and level.

Pipes are less likely to burst buried under concrete.

Sure. As long as that monolithic slab is nice and level, doesn't settle or crack, and doesn't have moisture issues. Ask a pest control company what they think about slabs and treatment.
