Long range 22 shooting

Absolutely! Very satisfying. Especially when the delay is so long you think it missed then you hear the ping!

400 is the farthest I have had a chance to try. 10” plate at 300 is doable but that is really hard for me to hit consistently at 400. Part of that is even with a 25 MOA rail my Viper scope travel is done at 300. 400 is at the bottom of my scope sight picture. Not the bottom of the reticle, the bottom edge visible in the scope.

I was shooting an 8" plate at 300 in the vid. Had a 12" plate at 400. I was dialed 15mils at 300yds. 400 called for 23.6 I think so I dialed to 16mils (max) on my athlon Argos and held over for the rest. I'm also running a 25 moa rail. Gonna get some better ammo and go for 400 again

Never went past 100 yards with a 22LR, but I've done it with both a 22 mag and a 17hmr.

Hitting a steel plate at 200 yards with an iron sighted 22 mag is a ton of fun.

100 yards is fairly simple ... 200 with a little thinking ... 300 gets challenging ... beyond that even a gentle breeze screws me up big time.

Drop is fairly easy to dial in even thought it’s almost exponential when you cross 200 or so yards but with just a 2mph breeze at 100 yds it drifts about 1” ... 200 yds it jumps to about 5” ... 300 yds goes to 10” ... and so on. Go to 5 mph and the drifts go up to around 3” ... 12” ... and 24” respectively to the above distances. That little .22lr round is so light and such a small BC wind drift is the devil.

What load are yall using for this? I need to find something better than CCI std velocity. My CZ doesn't group well with it.

I'm fortunate to have good long distance eyeballs, so I enjoy long shots with iron sights. I've got a Henry Frontier Long Barrel .22 that I bought to share a Lee Shaver Soule type ladder sight with a Marlin 336CB 30-30. I've shot the .22 at 350 yards, wanna go at least twice that distance, mebbe more.

I was shooting CCI standard velocity in the vid. I also shoot geco. I would like to get some nicer ammo like Wolf, SK, or Eley Tenex to try.

We regularly shoot our .22's out to 500 at Frontline. I've even gotten a few random hits at 600, but I was holding well off my reticle to do it. If you want to have some fun, you should come shoot a Precision Rimfire Match. It is positional shooting with the targets at ranges anywhere from 50 yards to 350 yards.

I would like to give that a try but Frontline is farther than I want to drive to do it; 2.5 hours from me.

Aren't you the guy I was talking to on the other forum about cz's and you bought an extended bolt for your 455? Can you post a pic? I'd like to see it again. Wanting to put one on mine now.

My rifle really likes the Geco, and will shoot ragged dime or smaller holes with it at 50 yards - but it always seems to have a few fliers per box of 50. I get about the same results with Aguila Standard Velocity. Honestly, that is not bad for how cheap those are. My rifle also likes the Wolf match, and it has less fliers, but it is a little more pricey. I know a few guys that are getting great results out of the Norma Match stuff, but I have not tried it. For matches, I have switched to the CMP Standard by Eley. It shoots just as good as the Geco in my rifle, but without the random fliers. So far, every group I have chrono'ed with it has had a single digit SD.

My CZ does not like CCI std vel either. It does like SK Standard Plus which is not that much more expensive. I get it for $55 a brick from Outdoor Limited in High Point.

This is my bolt:

I got it here:

Yep, glades was it. I couldn't remember the name of the place. No issues with scope clearance I'm guessing? Wanting a bigger/longer bolt handle but mines already pretty close.

Mine actually scrubs the right side of my scope a little bit because of the way I have it set up now. If I were to raise the scope just a little bit, or move it just a little bit forward, it would not hit. I am about to switch scopes and that will require a higher set of rings, so that should take care of that.

What's your setup now? I'm running a 6-24x50, med rings, dip 25 moa rail

Frontline Defense, it's worth the trip, I'm about 1h 15m out here in Raleigh,
some members drive from Charlotte and Richmond to shoot at FLD.

Easy for us to say drive but please try to make at least one match, you'll have a blast.

I have a 25 MOA D.I.P. rail with an Athlon Helos 6-24X50 on low rings, set way back. But I am about to put my old Konus Pro F30 8-32X56 back on it just for giggles. I have an AR-15 long range rifle that currently has a Primary Arms 4-14X44 on it and I am going to move the Helos onto that rifle.

Or just hook up with one of us members and come up as a guest on a weekend sometime. In addition to the 25/50/100 yard paper range, FLD has a 300 yard dedicated rimfire range with steel targets at 200, 250 and 300. It also (usually) has a know your limits plate rack at 50 yards with spinners that range from 2" down to .25" in 1/4 inch increments. The 500 yard steel range is open to the public and has plates at 200, 300, 400 and 500, so on one visit, you can gather dope from a .25 inch 50 yard zero all the way out to 500 yards. And, of course, you can also bring anything else you want to run out to 500 yards (except .50 cal or 338 Lapua).

As good as CCI Std velocity is for many it also doesn't do well in my CZ 455. Best I've found is ELEY Match (black box). Tenex isn't really any better so no need to spend extra $$. Tried some Lapua Center X and it did very well. Only went through 1 box but it was as very accurate and consistent which some others complained about. I've got some Federal Gold Medal Match to try and hoping it does well - some others w/ CZ's said it did well for them. For me ... good is ok but really good is better and matters (to me) sometimes.

As far as long range - I've only gone out to 100 as that's the longest that I have access to. Found it to be easy to do with my CZ455. I'd love to be able to go further with it if I could find a place and the time to do it.

As an aside - it's important to either stay above or below the speed of sound - if you transition from above to below strange things can happen to accuracy so it's something to consider.

Edit: Seeing the mention of FLD - I actually went out there to check out a match a month or so ago and thinking about joining to start doing some long(er) range shooting. Just finished a move and work has been nuts but things settling down now so I may revisit that idea.

Come on up. There are a lot of folks at FLD that are getting into the long range rimfire game. In fact, we just had a large combination NRL/PRL rimfire match this past weekend. Representatives from Ruger showed up and gave away 3 Ruger Precision Rifles (Two were .22 and the other was a 6.5 Creedmoor) at the match. It is a good group of folks up there.

Think I'm about set on the CZ 455 Tacticool. DE Guns has a sale on them right now with shipping and FFL still $50 better than I can find anywhere local.

Hard to go wrong with a CZ. Shoot well and easy to upgrade.

If you go with the CZ 455, D.I. Products [https://www.diproductsinc.com/] has 25 MOA rails (get the 11 mm extended version - you'll need the length/range for a good optic) and trigger spring kits that will lighten the trigger pull as much as you want. They also have lots of other upgraded parts for CZ rifles. If you want an oversize, extended bolt handle, check out the selections at Glades Armory [http://gladesarmory.com/6/cz].

Just as an idea for all you long range 22lr shooters ? I had some pretty good results out of my 455 using Aguila Super Extra ammo at 1255 FPS ammo. Now, it wasn't as good as Eley Black or Wolf match at 50 yards which is what I was competing with at that time, but the Aquila printed pretty darn good for a high velocity round. This might help out you all that are using low velocity rounds seeking accuracy but running out of scope adjustment? The higher velocity will also help combat wind drift due to the shorter amount of time the bullet is in the air.

Thanks for the suggestions all. Going to place the order today. Now time for some glass :)

Any recommendations on glass? Prefer to get something a little nicer but I would be looking for something that has adjustments from 25 yards or so out to at least 300 (don't plan to shoot that far but hey, why not).

A lot of scopes only adjust for parallax down to 50 yards so watch for that. What is your budget number. Midrange is 150 to some and 1000 to others.

I don't want to spend $1000 right now but I'm willing to spend $500.

Many years ago I had a 22 target rifle with a 36x scope on it that would focus down to 25 yards.
Fun watching a 22 LR go down range and hit the target at 100 yards.
You can learn a lot by being able to watch the bullet flight.

I would recommend the Athlon, even before I saw your two choices above. For the money, in each class scope, they are hard to beat. The price isn’t that much higher than that Vortex, but you are getting much more from the Athlon.

This doesn’t really mean much (except that many people agree it is a great option at the price point), but the Athlon Argos was reported as the most used scope at the 2018 NRL22 Championships.

I have the Cronus and love it, based on the reviews, it was easy to choose it at half the price of it competition with the same high quality glass and build quality.

I'd go with the Argos. Mainly because it is first focal plane, it has a better reticle, it has exposed, tactical turrets and you can rig up a zero stop with washers/shims. The Vortex listed above is more of a low end hunting scope.

Another happy Athhlon user ... 4.5-27x50 Ares

And for general purpose shooting with lower mad I’ll throw in ... Leupold VX2 4-12x40 w/ AO and fine duplex reticle but it’s discontinued

I have an Argos on my CZ I'm shooting in the vid. I have been pleased with it for the money. The turrets are hit or miss though. I have one that is super spongey and another feels great. If you can swing the Ares I'd recommend it highly. Much better glass and a true zero stop.
