Best quality sights for long range? That actually is decent. Hard time finding one I like just throw some recommendations out. I’m practicing more in my long range shots rather than close range at the moment

What do you consider long range, and what is your budget?

1000+yards. I know a lot of people can’t Phathom the thought of shooting at these distances and most people scoff at the thought of it but I’m honestly most interested in competition, not really plinking or anything.

If you stick around here for a bit, you may find that most won't think that shooting 1000+ yards is unfathomable in the least.

What rifle are you putting it on?

EDIT: Here's a long-running thread on some of the members' longer-range rifles. https://carolinafirearmsforum.com/index.php?threads/precision-rifle-picture-thread.475/

Sightron makes good glass for the money. SIII 8-32X50 good for general 1000yd shooting. Step up from there to their PLR scopes and from there to their SV scopes. 10-50x60 for benchrest type shooting. Double the price and you are into Nightforce NXS scopes or their Competition model. I have all the above.

Okay good that makes me feel better I am in the right place then. And a CheyTac M200

Damn nice rifle, from what I've heard. $2K is 'budget glass' compared to the rifle, lol. .408 or .375? I never tried one, but have a .375 cartridge floating around here somewhere - impressive looking.

I was once told by an instructor at a sniper school, "After this, you'all be going to run out and build precision rifles.....when it comes to glass, gather every dime you have - and borrow some more."

It is a .408, and yes sir it really is still budget glass. I might try to save up and just get a really good one. One that is worth it for the .408. Considering I plan on having this forever

There is a rule of thumb that the optic should be 2-2 1/2 times the cost of your rifle. That said, $1,200 can purchase decent glass; this isn't the 90s and you have choices.

Thank you I will keep that in mind, but to be 2-2 1/2 times my rifle id be in the mid 30,000s

Yeah, I know. That gets into unobtainium categories.

Check out SWFA website (as well as their optic). They have a couple Burris 3.3-18x50 XTRs demo models on sale:

For a bit north of your price point they have a Schmidt & Bender, too, as well as Valdata.

Eurooptics has a Vortex Razor 3-18x50 for a bit above your price, too. Sport Optics has some pretty good deals, too. Check out Leupold, and they have Nightforce for $1,290.

I have shot that rifle to 2500 yards with the CheyTac guys in Idaho using a NF 5.5-22 NXS. This was back around 2009 so plenty of other options for glass now. You wanting a FFP or SFP scope?

Athlon cronus

Leupold MK5HD

nightforce

Etc

The whole “rule of thumb” that an optic should be more than the rifle should’ve died years ago. It’s simply not true anymore.

Yes, which is why I said "That said, $1,200 can purchase decent glass; this isn't the 90s and you have choices." The optics market has come a long way.

Not gonna lie, didn’t even see your comment. That wasn’t directed at you lol. I had a 6GT built and back when I asked for optics recommendations people told me “if the rifle was 3K you better spend at least 3K”. Yeah effing right lol

Nightforce makes a tough scope. The NX8 and ACTAR series uses the ED glass, and it's impressive. Their other product lines are also excellent, but without the ED glass.

Leupold Mark 5 is also a nice scope with great glass.

If you ever go past 1000 yards, consider a scope with a 34 or 35mm tube. They will have more elevation to stretch it out if you desire.

C'mon man, is there anything better than the 1980's USMC 10X Unertl??? :D

Yes. LOL Unless building a spec M40A1 then no.

I would love to have that optic, on that rifle. That is a bucket list rifle for me.

There is a guy on here selling a Leupold Mk IV M4 10x which was the replacement to this (or one of the replacements), I'd take that scope, too.

Don’t think the Leupold was a replacement for the Marines. I know the Army used them on the M24. I thought Marines went from this to the Premier Reticles/S&B scope but might be wrong.

On the DMR SAM-R we used both the 10x and the 3-10 (both Leupold). The Scout-Sniper community used Leupold 10x for a bit but did move on to S&B. I think they also have some Nightforces in inventory as well, but now I might be misremembering. That was then, and I have been out a hot minute.

Edited to add, I just found this article from 2018 about NF:

And see a 2022 article talking about "upgraded optics."

Anything else I see merely says "caliber agnostic precision day optic" for the new Mk22 rifle, and the Wiki page shows the M40A5 with the S&B 3-12.

Yeah for the DMR possibly but was talking more about the earlier ones mid 2000s as I remember the swap over from the MSTs and the sale of them and transfer to the Premier S&B but that was during the M40A1 and transitioning to the A3 time frame.

Having owned those Leupolds I wouldn’t take either over the scopes available today unless needed for a spec rifle.

Definitely better on the market (NF, S&B). I just want them for nostalgia purposes on a clone build, either an older M40 or a SAM-R.

Calling an M40A6 a 'legacy' rifle makes me feel old......
