found a model 700 tactical, are these worth it anymore? I know most everyone will ride on the coattails of older 700s but the freedom group has really messed things up. should I just look elsewhere?

It is true that over the past few years Remington is not as good as they used to be. I am not a good enough shooter to tell you qualitatively why that is the case, but I shoot a Rem 700 action with a Hart barrel that is good as any rifle out there. I know John Boyette likes the Savage over the current Remington products.

yeah I mean, accuracy is a concern but so is the quality control, things like the triggers and chambers.

The stock trigger, I do not like. They had the debacle with the recall. The pre-recall trigger was much better. I usually see people getting them for the action and tossing/selling everything else.

Depends on the exact model number. The regular P had the crap trigger but some of the LE models had the old (good) one even though they were new production (like 2015-16). They are typically easily identifiable with a big knurled bolt knob and 5R barrel. Also the adjusting screw for the trigger is in a different spot (and actually does something).

LE Remingtons are still made by people that have some sense but I wouldnt buy a regular one.

FWIW, I got a post-recall 700 and it's been a much better gun than I could have hoped for. I upgraded the chassis (kept the original trigger, action, and barrel) and took it to a long-range match and it performed as well as anything .308 could expect to.

You'd have to get pretty good before the 700 is holding you back, imo :)

I wouldn't hesitate to get one again (although, I'd probably change caliber since it looks like .308's are going to be slowly replaced by 6.5 creed in the military and it's a better long-range round)

I am looking at just a regular tactical in a magpul stock, not sure of the age.

Chances are that it will serve you well. Chances are it'll outshoot you. If it does, upgrade parts or buy a new rifle. If it's a decent price, it's worth pulling the trigger.

While there are better rounds, the .308 in the military ain't going anywhere any time soon......

I'm not really wondering about the capabilities of the round or the rifle, just the outlook on the quality of the newer remingtons vs what can be had for in the price range.

Savage. Savage is what can be had in the same price range. Old Rem trigger > Savage, new Rem trigger = Savage, Rem action +/- Savage (though many like Save better than newer Rem). The probability of a lemon, though present, is low.

most tikka t3 ctr are around 950 non threaded with 100$ mags although that is new and I wouldn't have to buy a scope base.
