Looking at a Sightmark Wraith, help me decide on the 4-32x50 or the 2-16x28

I have been looking for a good low budget night vision setup for use on my land at night with coyotes. I am trying to stay under $500. I was just looking at a Konus Konuspy 13 binoculars but then stumbled across the wraith. Any real world experience and which model would you personally choose, the 4-32x50 or the 2-16x28? I am leaning towards the 2-16x28 just because i feel the 4-32x50 is a little impractical. I will be running this on a 16" 5.56 setup. I cant decide on whether to get the wraith or just standard binoculars, or what else would work in that budget range? I know some people out there will say save the extra $$$ and get a $1500+ setup but in all reality i am just going to be using this in my backyard at night to keep coyotes away, nothing too fancy. Thanks in advance!

I've been looking at the oneleaf NV commander. Clip on night vision. Sub 500 dollars. But limited in range. But can be use by itself or clip on to any scope

i wanted to go that route but I dont have any scopes, just red dots. The largest red dot I have is a sig romeo 7 i am currently using on my Aug. May be a better route to get the clip on though?

I think its better if you have a multi purpose rifle , it would be the way to go. I do very little night hunting and hate to dump over 500 into a scope I use once a month or less. The clip on adds the multiple us factory for me. And at the price point if I use it a few times a year I'm happy.

I've got the 4x and if I'd been buying new I'd have got the 2x. I'd rather have better close up capability than more "magnification".

I was very pleasantly surprised by the Wraith however, image quality and night performance exceeded what I was expecting. And being able to use a battery bank to power it rather than futzing around with AAs in the dark is a big plus. I've only gotten to play with it so far, haven't been able to get to shoot in a while, but it's worked great spying on the wildlife.

Not sure where Indian Trail is but if you want to have a gander before you drop cash let me know.

To be fair the Wraith makes for a decent daylight scope too in day mode.

I just landed the wraith 2-16x28 for right at 400 bones. I am pretty content on that! Sounds like it’s a great optic at that price point! Y’all are more than welcome to come out to my land anytime and help me pop off a few coyotes!!

Thanks! I need to sight the thi g in still and get the hang of it but that sounds pretty cool

I've never heard of this nv optic before, but after watching several YouTube videos, I want one.

I'd clip it onto a Vortex strike eagle 1-6x24.

I'm a little worried about eye relief and adding a 5 inch long nv device there. Will it interfere with eye relief? Also, which size adaptor should I get?

Edit: Vortex scope eye relief is 3.5 inches. The oneleaf is 5 inches long, plus the adaptor... Well that be a problem?

Thanks!

The Wraith is solid for a $500 day night scope. We sell them in the shop. I ran a wraith before I went with thermal. The have a Wraith 4K Mini. Its a cool little optic. Magnification is overrated in night hunting. Most of your shots are 100 yds ish. I'm not saying you wont wing it out there at 400, but usually its hard to identify what you are shooting at that distance. Plus, the magnification gets really pixelated at higher powers. 99.5% of my coyotes Ive killed have been within 100 yds. We killed 146 last year.

Clip-on systems with which I'm familiar are usually attached to the objective end of the scope, not the eyepiece/exit pupil end like the oneleaf nv commander. Given this, I'm trying to wrap my head around how one might accomplish what you suggest ... and still have good cheek weld both with AND without the oneleaf NV commander installed .... given how far forward one's scope must be mounted sans oneleaf NV commander ... to accommodate the 5ish inch long oneleaf NV commander when it's added to the eyepiece/exit pupil end of the scope.

Or is the plan to toss good cheekweld out the window when the oneleaf unit is installed?

Out of curiosity, what thermal (optic? clip-on?) did you move to? I'm asking because I run an iRay Jerry-C with nods (great for scanning with nods -- or using to follow blood trails by itself), and that particular toe in the thermal world has me eyeing thermal optics for potential purchase, next year.

Yeah my "hunting grounds" for the coyotes on my property all take place under 200 yards in either direction. I didnt want to get the 4-32x50 because i know thats overkill for my needs and the eye relief isnt quite as good as the 2-16x28. I am excited, this is my first dabble in the "night vision" department. I have never been a sightmark fan and I know the wraith is a joke in the true night vision community but hey for my budget itll work. Maybe in the future Ill upgrade!

While it's not a set of passive binocular image intensifiers, I was pretty darn happy with the results I got piddling around with it. Having gotten it properly set up I am shocked how well it works for the price.

Sure, anyone with passive NODs will eat your lunch, but coyotes, pigs and trespassers usually don't have that.

I have an ATN Thor 4, which is pure crap if you listen to all the predator forums. I like it. Really, I can get anything I want here at the shop. I think the ATN has the most features for the money. My buddy shoots a $9k trijicon and the other hunts with a $4k Thermion both of them say mine is clearer. The recoil activated video and the battery life far surpasses the worth on that ATN price tag.

Thanks! Which sensor and lens???

Nobody ever answered me, so I bought one.

It came in the mail today. I'm really impressed with how well made it is. I've already taken it out of the box and set it up.

I'll try to give an update tonight after I try it out in the dark... But I'm really impressed so far!

I ended up getting the 2-16x28 model wraith. very well made and I am impressed. Never thought much of Sightmark before this. I am having a little bit of a hard time seeing more than 50 yards in front of me clearly. I may need a stronger IR light.

I'm hoping this little one leaf works well. I don't plan to shoot it past 75yds. There are youtube videos of people shooting nearly 300yds at night with no additional IR light... Probably depends on how much ambient light there is already (moonlight, stars, etc).

I'm glad you like yours!

Very interested to hear how it is. I haven't ordered one yet

You have to aim it. Try setting up with a stand of trees or a wall or something as your "target" loosen the screws that hold the light in the ring and try aiming it until you have a good coverage. Also on mine first click is lowest power, there's three levels total.

I can see my neighbours yard 200yds away on middle power once I aimed it right.

Alright... Mixed results... I don't love it, but I also don't hate it. I need to play with it more.

Earlier today, I attached it to a scope and got it dialed in, in the daylight. Everything looked great in the day time.

After sunset, I turned it on and couldn't see anything. What was perfectly clear in daylight was then completely blurry at night.

I took it off the scope and carried it outside and held it in my hands like a monocle. While holding it in my hand, I was able to get everything back into focus and play around with the settings.

It works! I can see in the dark. But, it's black and white, not green like I was expecting. It's a little pixelated, but I'd definitely be able to see any critters. It looked great all the way out to 75 yards where my tree line starts.

I invited my kids to come outside and have a look. They both ooohd and aaahd.

Now, I need to get it back on a scope and figure out how to get the picture to look clear under magnification in the dark.

I think it's going to do the job. It just needs a little more trial and error.

good to know!!! I am heading out there tonight to fidget with it more. I was wondering what the 3 power levels were on the IR light. I did read the manual haha

On stand by to hear if you can get it to work. I wonder if it requires a eye relief distance to work. Or just needs to be dialed to the scope

one thing I was pondering, with eye relief, its easier for me to mount this on my bren 2 5.56 11" opposed to my 16" Aug. I am just wondering how much the barrel length would affect overall velocity and lethality at 100 yards

What are you planning to shoot? Coyotes?

I think 5.56 coming from an 11" barrel would give plenty velocity for killing coyotes at 100yds...

yeah i figured as much. I overthink everything and do way too much internet research haha. plus the wraith looks so much better on the bren and a lot lighter of a setup!

I joined the club this week buying a Sightmark Wraith 4K Mini 2-16x32 Digital Rifle Scope. Took it out for the first time last night and was pretty happy even though I didn't see any game.

Even at the base magnification of 2X I was, at times, wishing for 1X. I came away feeling that you really don't need a lot of magnification for ranges out to 100 yards or so. This optic gives you plenty of reticle choices including both SFP & FFP options.

I wear glasses and did not use the rubber eye cup, perhaps I'll play around with that in the future. Now I see the need for a thermal monocular! I have friends with thermal / NV setups costing 10 to 20 times what this unit did but it should work for my needs besides I can always borrow their stuff. 😄

How's the OneLeaf doing? I want to get something soon. Kinda stuck between my options.

Honestly, I haven't turned it back on since the first try, last week. Been too busy with life and work.

At this moment, I would not buy it again. It works great as a handheld monocle. It's good at that and it records video and audio.

It would probably work just fine clipped onto a scope, but it messes with eye relief and I'm not getting the same cheek weld on my stock. I can remove my scope, move it forward, sight it in all over again, and keep messing with it, but that's more work than I have time to do.

I'm going to keep it and keep messing with it, but right now I think it works best as a hand held monocle.

I wish I'd just bought a thermal scope to begin with. But, still mildly happy with it, for what it is. It would be fun to take camping and watch critters in the woods at night...
