wanting a 1-6 or similar for my ruger sr556. I’m eyeing the 1-6 gen 2 viper very hard but am concerned with weight. The rifle without optics is 7.9# the optic is 22.7oz

What are some good options in the $500 range

Generally Leupold makes some nice lightweight options. Like the VXR Patrol. It is like 1.5X on low power which some don't like. But it is a nice scope.

I have a Vortex PST 1-6. It's really good. It's on a 18" rifle that probably weighs about what your does. I do use the Aero mounts (like 2 oz) that keeps weight down.
Fairly heavy, but that weight is to the rear so it's not bad.

Edit: You might also look at the Trijicon Accupower options. Have seen great deals on those, and quite a bit lighter than vortex.

Look at the Burris RT6 1-6x with the illuminated Ballistic AR reticle.
I like em alot!

I see the primary arms are $360 for a 1-6ffp.

Wonder if they’re worth it, or if $180 more for the vortex is smarter ?

The Vortex will destroy it in every way.

FFP at that price point is not ideal. I don't like their fussy reticles either. Just my opinions!

edit: I would choose the Burris at that price.

RT6 weighs 17.4 oz and is shorter than most other 1-6x LVPOs and comes with a lever. Also, forever warranty is as good as anyone else. And yeah the price is unbeaten for this type of quality glass. I looked thru alot of LVPOs under $500 before this little 3 gun gem

+1 for the RT-6 recommendation. I put one on my AR before I ran last years 5k run n gun at the Clinton house. Worked great and took a pretty good beating. Very good glass as well.

Ive got a Steiner p4xi, It is an great optic. Crystal clear glass, wide field of view, and rather light weight. The Trijicon accupoint and accupower are also very nice

So far for the money the Nikon I am primary arms first focal plane seem to be about the best bang for the buck. I’m still kind of set on the vortex but just wonder if it’s worth the extra $200 and if it will make it too heavy.

I think it’s worth the money. I went through 3 cheaper scopes. Wish I would have just cut to the chase and got a good one to start with.

Also, don’t overlook the PA second focal plane 1-6. It’s cheaper and has many many satisfied users. Personally, I’d get that before the FFP. Just my opinion.
