Low end deer rifle duel

Shot placement.

High shoulder or neck shots is less than 3 yards, those lung and heart shots can run 50+

I have only one time seen a deer shot with rifle or shotgun slug only through the lungs or heart and lungs do anything other than kick on the afterburners and not even slow down for at least 100 yards.

Also consider 6.8 SPC; it's been my main hunting round since 2012. My hunting handload uses a 105 grain Cavity Back all copper bullet at 2750 fps from a 16" barrel.

In a duel 243 wins hands down for deer. Every time anytime all the time. If you want it suppressed than 300 wins. The only reason to pick 300 over 243 would be to suppress it. A 300bo will kill deer. So will 762X39 and 30-30. I still prefer the 30-30win. 0-300 yards 243 will take the shoulder off a whitetail.

All of them dead where they stood. The buck was 378 yards. Hit him with a Nosler green tip out of a .308 AR. didnt flinch. He was quartering away at damn near dark. Does killed with .243 handi rifles. <50 yds. DRT.

While I like 6.8, and 7.62x39 for hunting with AR's, they are less powerful than a 243, but more than enough. A few years ago, everyone had to have a 7mm or 300 mag to hunt deer. Now that AR's have become popular, people have found out that deer are fairly easy to kill. I shot a deer about 10 years ago with a 7mm mag, and gut shot it. Everything but the heart and lungs came out in a green goo, and I almost lost my lunch. The off shoulder was destroyed.

Since then, I've moved to 308, then 6.8, and x39. The deer still die....

I hunted deer with a sks one season. I know for a fact 22lr will drop a deer with head shots.

When I read the title I pictured you and a deer who thinks IHOP is a high class establishment getting into a duel using rifles.

I thought a lot of deer in the US was killed by 30-30.

Other deers surprisingly die easily by nature's gentlest creature, the Chevy truck.

Actually, the 30 30 has already been mentioned, and I've killed 2 with Chevy trucks; not my preferred weapon, but it works well in a pinch.

I've been really impressed with my Ruger American Predator 308. You can find them sub $400. Its a heavy contour barrel that's threaded from the factory.

The Remington 783 with a scope is regularly on sale for less than $300 and less with rebate. Its basically a Marlin XL7 with the Remington badge. Great rifle.
