I had no idea a M16 bayonet would go for that money.

You have to remember... that was a Colt 601 bayonet, not an M16 bayonet. The 601 was Colt's first production AR15 rifle from 1959 - 1963 so original parts are RARE and priced accordingly.

Check out the retro black rifle website as they have some good detailed images of the Colt 601 and it's features.

My thought was always that if I had to attach my bayonet or pull the pin on a grenade it would be time to seriouly try and figure out where I went wrong in life.

Reminds me of what my father told me about his bayonet training...he told me they said to discharge the rifle if his bayonet got stuck, and he said “if I can discharge my rifle, there won’t be no damn bayonet fighting.”

That’s about the same thing I remember my dad telling me about basic training.

I asked a Green Beret friend what knife he carried into combat.

He said "A leatherman. We don't actually sneak up and slit peoples throats like in the movies. I do carry a pistol in case I have to shoot myself".

I am paraphrasing, but it really put things into perspective for me!
