I have been finding maggots in some of the peaches that I have picked from our tree.

First, I thought maggots only ate rotting meat. Wrong. The maggots of fruit flies eat the pulp of overripe or decaying fruits. This where I get confused (about maggots and fruit).

If the peaches are still on the trees, can they really be considered overripe or decaying? I would assume falling to the ground is a good indicator, but I picked a few today that had to be "snapped" from the limb. I haven't cut them open to see if they had maggots inside, but they did have the small holes on them like the ones that maggots were found in.

The holes...

You been playing with your BB gun again? o_O

My parents used to grow a lot of fruit trees. They were routinely spraying at various times during the season to prevent certain undesirable conditions.

One of the things that is on my homesteading to do list is learn ways to minimize or avoid the need for commercial chemicals and fertilizer though the use of natural or symbiotic control measures.

When I saw the title, I couldn't wait to open the thread. This is what my life has come to.

Is it not the fly laying eggs to hatch in the fruit in anticipation of it becoming over-ripe?

We should put up the Bat signal for the mistress of the woods, who's married to the master of the woods, @thrillhill

I bet she'll have some ideas.

Looks like you've also got a bit of peach scab fungus beginning (the dark spots that aren't worm holes).

Look for Bonide fruit tree spray at your local home improvement store. It works to prevent insects as well as diseases like peach scab.

It won't keep the deer from eating all your peaches...... unfortunately......

To sort of quote (I'm pretty sure it was) @fieldgrade who was explaining things to some whining Yankees: if the deer are in your freezer, they won't eat your garden, or your peaches.

Not me, but I'd bet that's a @Tailhunter quote if I ever heard one.

Unfortunately the neighbor's house is downrange of the peach orchard.....

This was at the old place that is now a rental. No peach trees here yet.

There are certain insects that inject their eggs in to the fruit when the fruit is very young. Peaches are hard to grow without spraying. I finally gave up on peaches as the peach borers kept killing my trees.

The Bonide fruit tree spray works if you stay on top of spraying. The spray ranges from about $50/gal to $75/gal depending on where you get it.

If anyone is interested, I have several unopened gallons that I would take $30 ea., picked up.

I put out 7dust for the Japanese Beatles but I've never seen maggots in a peach. I'd just eat the little bastards I bet they taste like peach.

Whereabouts in NC?

My two little trees are loaded with peaches and I would like to at least eat one. Lol.

And just nine months later, there is a thread asking for relationship advice that involves men wearing panties at Harbor Freight. I'm about to throw my laptop into the creek.

I understand but I'm curious as to what will be next to top this.
