I got into YouTube hell this morning, and stumbled on to this one and thought it was quite fascinating.

My grandfather and great grandfather rived shingles by hand for about 20 cents a day in the 20's.

You see the dude in the background working that lathe?

I find the old ways of woodworking pretty awesome. Roy the dude from the woodwright's shop has a "school" in downtown Pittsboro.

Friggin expensive though...

My Grandfather had an out building with wooden shingles and I have seem him do that a hundred times trying to save that shed. I never paid any attention to his technique all I knew was that I had to rake up all the shavings for the kindling box.

Love it. Great video. Ive never seen it done the radial way.
Having never made them and not paying attention to grandfather when I was too young and stupid to care about what we were actually doing. I kinda kick my own ass for not listening and learning what he was trying to show me back in the day.

The guy making them reminded me a lot of him, with the exception of the accent anyway.

I also like thatch. They said they seen 600 year old thatch roofs. Beats the shit out if a shingle.

Certain species such as white oak have a line of medullary ray cells that run from the center of the log to the perimeter. It's much easier to split the log along those cell lines which is what the guy is doing.

That is interesting to see but I am very glad I didn't have to resign or my house that way!
