Massad Ayoob - What to do if you get pulled over while carrying

Self describe to the non renewal of permit. Open carry, holstered on right side hip…..pulled over….no duty to inform….do you open mouth or keep quiet?

Pre-permit I'd have DL between fingers on the wheel, pistol on dash in slide lock & the mag across the dash & let them know when they walked up. I got one of two answers, profusely thanking me for informing them or "OK, don't touch it & I won't touch mine".
I was told I got out of a ticket a couple times for being up front.

In the late 1970s, when you were stopped, if you handed any LE a CWP and told them you were armed, 100% of the time they would smile hand it back and say: Take care Podner and have a safe trip.......This was the "norm" until 1998.........After that the CWP was nuetered and opened to Everybody.
I’m not following you. Do you feel that a concealed carry permit should not be available to John Q Public?

"Neutered"? How so? Why would it need to be
The first CWP was the strongest you could imagine. You could Carry EVERYWHERE. I have sat on jury duty with a Colt Mexican carry. You could aand we did carry EVERYWHERE. We actually could carry firearms where local LEs could not outside their jurisdiction.
In 1998 all that changed. That's why you have to be so careful with the Gubment...they giveth...they always Take Away. Our new CWP is a great upgrade just in the fact the old Printing-Flashing problem no longer exists.

It’s only supposed to be for the elite :p
This is the God's truth...we had to jump through so maany hoops to get a CWP it was amazing. It was set up so that you would give up trying. The initial program was set up for 3,500 people to have them as a test.....they never got close to that many. It was more of a political permit than anything. John Jenrette finally had to get their attention for mine to get issued. That was in 1976...the program started in 1975. Before that the Chief of SLED issued his own CWPs to his cronies. We are over 500,000 in issuance now. Think about that in a state of 5 million. My CWP number is 1XXX.

I hope you read my following comments. Get back to me after you read..you tell me if I stepped in anything.
Your following comments cleared up my initial impression of your comment.
I was also watching to see if folks went off the rails before you replied.
The first impression doesn't line up with who we know you to be.

Last time i went through a checkpoint, I was still a plumbing contractor - handed the rookie trooper permit and license -he gave me this funny look and said "Oh you are going to have to pull over to the side and wait. I pulled over and waited about 10 minutes. Some other troopers arrived at the checkpoint, and I saw one I knew, so I flashed my lights at him when he looked my way. He came over and asked why I was there. I explained the situation and he said Good Lord and called the rookie over. When he walked over, the trooper I knew, who was senior to the rookie, said to him " Can't you see this man is trying to work? What exactly IS your problem?" He turned to me and said "You are free to go -sorry about that" Turned around to return to checkpoint just shaking his head. The rookie stood there with egg on his face as I pulled off.

That's why I don't like leaving things "open". You have been here twice as I remember it. If somebody told me at today's gathering...Pink Vapor said only him and his friends should have CWPs. My reply would be simple...That's not the Pink Vapor I met, Can't be!
After all this time and Way too many posts......people should know what I stand for. I played the game that the State gave me to play and with great difficulty I got to play. It was not open to everybody...UNLESS you were willing to see a Doctor, Get a Bond, Contact local PD for "testing", Then the finger prints [not so simple as today]. Then an Investigation..this is what they used to wash out the ones they didn't want to have it. If you got by All of that, the CWP you got was Amazing. In 1998 they opened it up to all...22 years after I got one...the New and Improved is what we had until this last change. That is the S.C. history on CWPs. I have been told from Regulatory that mine "could be" the lowest number still in existence.
Hope this clears this up. I value yours and @fieldgrade opinion.

Y'all sure do get stopped a lot, huh? I have yet to have to show a police officer my permit, because I haven't been stopped. Knocking on wood..... 😇
Not recently. As @Beef15 mentioned, swing shift is a great way to catch attention. Or if you have to make a more-than-1hr drive to be there before 5am and you blend in with the folks leaving the bar after a short nap...

So, I was rear ended about 2 years ago, Holly Springs PD showed up, i told the officer I had a firearm, he just acted like, that’s fine, no big deal. the whole thing was just a simple transaction.

Like others have said I hand them my CHP w/license, saying "I am armed". Sometimes they ask where is it, sometimes not, one even asked "can I see it".

Only had trouble one time at a 4th of July midnight road-block thing. Fat chick was all hyper-nervous, radioed in the s.n., slammed it down on the hood of my truck. Treated me like she'd just caught John Wilkes Booth or something. The guys standing behind her were rolling their eyes but saying nothing.

Bitch.
