I don’t know if an alien invasion would be better or worse than NC hurricane season, but I’d be willing to give it a go.

Oddly enough, I've thought along similar lines. I always thought but was unusual that multiple governments around the world would suddenly adopt culture ending programs and agendas. I've thought what's the bigger picture we don't know about? What's so global that all countries agree?

On a more serious note: I have often wondered if the delusion mentioned in 2 Thess is actually "evidence" of extraterrestrial life in some sort of hyperintelligent scam. God says very clearly that because people hate (refuse to love the truth is actual verbiage of the passage, hate is from elsewhere) the truth, GOD WILL SEND THEM A LIE and they will believe that. This flies all over moderns, who imagine that God "owes" an objective, rational, detailed argument which is, again, "objective." ( am not sure what they mean by that, nor do I believe they do)
Instead the picture is of someone who perverts clear evidence, argues against it, suppresses the truth, and so He says "you want to believe lies? Here is a dandy!" and people run to it hard as they can go.
Sky events, finding transcendence in "aliens," wanting to believe in something bigger but hating the obvious implications there....

The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Mere speculation on my part, but a bit more grounded than "aliens" imo.

I have often wondered the same thing as to what "the delusion" could be. I am just trying to watch events as they unfold as to their part in the grand scheme of things. The pieces, I think, are coming together.

What got me started thinking about this was actually a crisis in my own faith. I visited Palenque, which is a famous Maya ruin site down in S. Mexico, near the Guatemala border (it is really awe inspiring, you should visit if you never have). Amazing pyramids and remnants of a dazzlingly advanced culture in so many ways. What got me tilted was a glyph my guide showed me. I was so cheap I would not spend the 50 bucks for an English speaking guide, and instead paid 20 for a Spanish speaker, so some aspects were a little slow, but I could make out. Anyway, this guy (who was a shaman, and kept trying to offer me shrooms! lol) shows me a rock inscription of this Mayan king, riding on what clearly could only be a rocket, flying off into space. He (the guide) told me that shrooms were a sacred plant and the Mayans used them to communicate with extraterrestrials, who once populated the earth. This shook me a little, because there is a common metastory behind so many of the ancient cultures, from Incas in Peru, to the Indian/Near Eastern stuff, to African. I stopped and thought "what if THIS is actually the metamyth behind all of humanity and your stuff about the Bible and Jesus is the real fairy tale?" I was so perplexed by this, and so shaken, that I just went off and sat a while, and thought about it (the tour was over). I finally said "God, if you are REALLY the God of truth, you have to help me see the logical problems with this." Almost immediately, no "voice" or anything, just a kind of superintelligence injected as it were into my head.... "spoke" ... yet without speaking "if there is an evil supernatural power who is prominent and present, would you not EXPECT there to be a similar alt-story that spans cultures.... I mean after all, if it is spawned from ONE MIND, would you not expect it to be similar?" I almost laughed out loud. I did in fact chuckle. I spent a little time thinking thru this and it makes sense to me. It also affected (as you can tell) the way I exegete 2 Thess 2:9 ff. I could be wrong, and could be "reading this into" the text. I am aware that subjective experience is not the final word on these things. Lets just say it got my antennae up and makes me go "Hmmmmmmm"

Probably boring, but that's my story, anyway.
