Medicare Part G?

If you are an older senior citizen and can no longer take care of yourself and need Long-Term Care, but the government says there is no Nursing Home care available for you, what do you do?

You may opt for Medicare Part G.

The plan gives anyone 75 or older a gun (Part G) and one bullet.
You may then shoot one worthless politician.
This means you will be sent to prison for the rest of your life where you will receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, a library, and all the health care you need.
Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a hearing aid, new hip, knees, kidney, lungs, sex change, or heart? They are all covered!
As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now!

And, who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you they can't afford for you to go into a nursing home. And you will get rid of a useless politician while you are at it.

And now, because you are a prisoner, you don't have to pay any more income taxes!

Is this a great country or what?

My 79 year old mother lives with us.
Medicare won't cover a nursing home or a home health aid. Her SS income is $1k too high for Medicaid which does cover nursing home care.
My mother is still reviewing from a fall last November. Can't drive yet, can't walk without a walker, and can't go anywhere by herself due to her high risk of falling.
Luckily she has gained enough strength back that she can help my son get her up if she does fall.
The kicker? Medicare forced her release from rehab after the fall before she was ready because of the way rehab has to score her progress.
At least the they have covered having PT come to the home and someone to help her shower once a week.
Nursing homes in NC run upwards of $4k a month. And most smell like urine the minute you walk in to front door.

Medicare isn't designed to cover this.

Have you talked to attorneys who specialize in elder law and Medicaid?
Not yet. If my mother was a more independent, it would not be so hard on my wife. My wife has her own disabilities to deal with and taking care of my mother has become quite draining. Even more so when I'm in China for a month at a time (But that may change. Got a call regarding a job in the Durham area).
None of my siblings have a home that can accommodate my mothers physical limitations.
Caring for an elder parent is a noble pursuit. But it is a lot more work than one can imagine. And when that parent refuses to accept that they are no longer independent, that just increases the stress. My mother is the master of passive aggressive. :D But I understand why because of all the abuse she suffered in childhood on into her adult life.

My thought process is all over the place on these things.

First off, I don't see that it is the governments job to provide a place for our parents to live. (BUT) it is a tough job and sometimes help is needed.
Been there, done that.

Kids be patient with your parents as they grow old, Parents stop being a-holes to your kids. Seems like this should be an old Chinese proverb or something. :p
