Memorial Day: "In Flanders Fields" John McCrae, 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
in Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw
The Torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
in Flanders fields.

I heard a story on the radio one day in the lead up to Memorial Day that made me pull off the road and cry like a baby.

Take some time this coming weekend to contemplate the freedoms that have been been bought with the blood and suffering of our our ancestors, and what we owe them for the preservation of it. Here's a link to the story I mentioned:

I posted this on another site last year.
Today, we honor the ones who didn't come home. Today isn't about a BBQ, a party or a mattress sale. Today is about the Soldiers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, fathers, mothers, husbands and wives, who paid the ultimate price, and never returned home to their families. Think about them today as you go about celebrating this holiday. Pray for them and their families. They are the true Hero's of this country and the real reason that we have the freedom that we enjoy. I have seen too many flag draped coffins loaded onto aircraft for that long, sad flight home. Godspeed Bothers!

I only served during peacetime. My brothers as well. My oldest brother did get activated and sent to Germany for the 1st Gulf war.

My nephew though has 4 tours in the sandbox and is currently somewhere in Europe.

My ancestors were in every conflict from the beginning of this country.

My dad came home from the Pacific and Europe. I'm sure it changed him in ways I'll never know.

My heartfelt gratitude to all who never made it home and to those of you who were there.

It makes me both sad and angry to see how our "elected" elite piss on the memories of all who gave all to preserve this once great country and are actively engaged in destroying it.

Having one for you today dad. Thank you.

I spent three hours, this afternoon, standing outside my local Food Lion, handing out buddy poppies for my local VFW Post.

I said, "Happy Memorial Day.", about 3000 times. Every time I said it, it made me a little more disgusted.

Most people smiled and repeated it back and dropped $1 in the bucket.

One lady said, "But, it's not very happy, is it?"

I said, "No, but I don't know what else to say when I see all these people coming out with buggies full of beer, meat, and chips."

She said, "Educate them! Remind them about the 13 we lost in February, pulling out of Afghanistan."

She smiled and walked inside...

I think she was the only person I saw today who remembered...
