Home Depot and Lowe's give 10% discount to military vets and active service personnel. That's great, and shows appreciation and support of those who wear and have worn the uniforms of those who keep our country free.

Both stores require proof that you are a veteran, which is understandable. It gets a little awkward carrying a copy of your DD214 around with you so you can get your discount. I figured that I would take my DD214 to the local VA hospital in Oteen, and ask for a VA id card, which is acceptable proof for the discount. I walked in, with DD214 in hand and said, I am a Vietnam vet. I served 4 years active duty in the USAF. Here is a copy of my DD214. Please issue me an id card that verifies my veterinary status. Their reply was to hand me a stack of paperwork over an inch thick so I could be registered with them. I told them, "You don't understand. I don't want to REGISTER, I simply want an id card to prove that I am a veteran, so I can get my 10% discount. Here's my DD214 to prove my status." They replied, "No, YOU don't understand. If you don't REGISTER by filling out that paperwork, we cannot issue you an id card." There was stuff in those forms about my wife, her SS number, financial status, and on and on... I left in frustration.

A few months later I learned that the NC Dept of Motor Vehicles. will allow you to voluntarily add the word "VETERAN" on your driver's license if you show them a copy of your DD214. I went in to the closest DMV office that issues Driver's licenses, showed them my DD214, and asked to have my DL identify me as a "VETERAN." The guy looked at my DD214, asked me for $10.00 and told me to have a seat so he could take my picture for a new copy of my DL. About two weeks later, a new copy of my DL arrived from Raleigh with the word, "VETERAN" in blue letters on both the front and back. Now, when I ask for the military discount, I just show them my DL, and have not had any trouble getting it. We even have a local pizza restaurant that gives Military vets 10% off their bill. Sweet!

Last night, we were in the Home Depot in Hendersonville, and I was speaking to a department manager. Somehow, the topic of military discount came up, and he advised me that according to "Corporate" headquarters, the military discount is ONLY for ACTIVE military, or RETIRED military with 20 or more years service. He said sometimes they "bend the rules" locally, because other stores are more lenient in their policy. I asked him, "So you think that my service is not worthy of the discount? I reminded him that my year in Vietnam was just as dangerous as any currently serving member of the military." I told him that if Home Depot didn't think that my service in Vietnam was worth their military discount, I'd cut up my Home Depot credit card, send it to "Corporate" headquarters, with a note telling them to put this where the sun don't shine, and I'd be more than happy to take my business to the OTHER guys who value the service of ALL military vets, presently serving, or who have served at ANY time in the past, for ANY length of time.

What's the general opinion here?

Shop at lowes, problem solved.

I spent close to 7 years in, I don't really care if I get a discount because of it. I consider it more of a "nice to have" not a requirement for a company to give out.

Just my opinion of course

A Veteran is a veteran no matter what. Maybe the employee was just a gas bag, and didn't know the company policy? Maybe a look at corporate website is in order?

They have absolutely zero obligation to give a discount.

Agreed 100%. They have no obligation, but if they're going to give it to some vets, then they should give to ALL vets.

If I have to spend several hundred dollars in their store, I'm going to go to the store that gives me the best price, and so would most folks.

True, they have no OBLIGATION, but it sure is a nice INCENTIVE for a vet to shop where their service is recognized with a discount. I'm all about saving money to buy more "toys." :)

I traveled for work for years and had to source all my own materials at lowes or HD. I got the same response once when I asked about the discount at HD. I even had my disabled vet ID card from the VA. The manager explained that it was active duty or retired vets only. I then explained to him that I spend a minimum of 1-2 K a week with them or their competition. Since that day, lowes has received all my money.

My wife always asks for a military discount...I could give a rats ass, unless its free coffee and then I am all over it...give a discount, great, you don't, thats okay...this is America and to each their own.

Lowes vs HD...Looks like they are actually very similar policies...summary below and link to source...probably a lot of confusion in the stores and I would not be the least bit surprised to find that store managers modify the policy to fit their personal views, hence some honor all vets at all times.

Home Depot
A year round 10% discount up to a maximum $500 at all U.S. locations to active duty personnel, reservists, retired or disabled veterans and their immediate families. Must present a valid military ID. A 10% discount is also offered to all other military veterans on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day. Note: Many Home Depots are reported to provide a Veterans 10% discount year round.

Lowes
Lowes offers a regular 10% military discount to active duty military members and Retired Veterans, or VA Recipients. This 10% discount is also extended to the immediate family of those who are currently serving, Retired Veterans, or VA Recipients. Lowes honors all Veterans on three specific holidays: Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. During these three holiday weekends, Lowes extends the discount to all veterans who served honorably and who present a valid Form DD214 or other proof of service.

I have had the Home depot in Fuquay refuse me because I wasn't retired or active it is there policy. This seems to be happening more and more. I usually do not even think to ask, the wife is the one that will bring it up. It would be nice to be treated the same as other vets but I wont lose sleep over it. I will take my large purchases to someone who offers it though.

HD once upon a time told me that unless I have an active ID no discount is given unless on Veterans day, memorial, and the 4th. Lowes accepts VA, Active, retired, etc without issue.

I limit my spending at Lowe's due to other reasons and thus I shop smaller business for HW stuff.

I have a Veteran's designation my driver license. Vet plates on my truck. I never ask for a discount nor do I expect one. Not why I served.

I don't think ANYONE served just to get a discount when they got out. Most times I don't even ask for the discount, unless it's a substantial purchase. It's not a great discount, but it DOES pay the sales tax. I also realize that they have zero obligation to offer any discounts to anyone.

The only point I was making was that we should thank ALL veterans for their service, because ALL veterans combined, whether active, retired, served 4 years or two, EVERY ONE of them contributed to keeping our country and those of our allies, safe. Those who served in Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, or wherever, were in every bit as much danger, and had their lives every bit as much on the line.

I just find it odd that someone who offers discounts to SOME "veterans," wouldn't offer it to ALL veterans, regardless. Trust me, I've never lost a wink of sleep over it, I was just curious as to what others about SOME vets being treated differently than OTHER vets. I know that each branch of the service rags on the other branches, but at the end of the day, we're all on the same team, for the same purpose.

Honestly I get a policy offering a discount to active duty only. Retired? Meh I guess you should get something for your 20 years. To everyone else if you've been out for a while you should have your stuff together and not need a discount.

The only time I ever asked for a discount at Lowes I was buying 10 grand worth of appliances. I told the guy look I'm not active and not retired so I get it if you say no. He said sure thing and took a grand off.

I thank God that we're in good enough shape, that we don't NEED a discount, but who among us is gonna turn down an opportunity keep a few bucks in their pocket whenever possible? I always say, "Better in MY pocket than theirs..." Besides, every penny saved (or not spent) is another penny for the next gun! :)

As long as golden coral day is still a go we won't have any problems

Actually, I usually AVOID Golden Corral on Veteran's Day. The line usually comes all the way outside and down the sidewalk, and I don't want to stand in line for that long. I say, "Bravo" to any establishment who honors our vets. We go to Golden Corral almost every Monday night, and we appreciate their respect for the military. I don't feel like standing in line for that long, but that's just me.

Guy I work with had an issue with a local Home Depot not wanting to give him a Veterans discount. He went to lowes and hasn't had an issue

I've found that it depends on the cashier. Some, I show the "Veteran" on my DL, and they ring it up. Others, they state the policy correctly, it's just on those three holidays.

When I went to renew my CHP, the lady at the Sheriff's Office told me they didn't need a DD-214 because it was on my DL.

I was bugged more when Lowe's went through that phase where they refused to put "Christmas" on anything. I told the manager I wasn't going to buy a "holiday tree" and bought it somewhere else.

I put 30 years in and most of the time I don't ask nor care. The wife on the other hand will ask every time.

I avoid restaurants like the plague on Veterans Day. When I left the Army, I swore I'd never stand in a line again especially to eat! The last deployment to Kandahar, they'd do Serf and Turf every Friday night. That's what I really wanted, frozen lobsters boiled to rubber in a large trash can and steak that you couldn't chew the gravy off of. I'd come out of the TOC and shine my light down the line waiting outside of the chow hall and then go back to my barracks and heat up a can of soup! I still feel that way and it pisses the wife off every time we go out to eat or to a movie. About the only time I use a military discount is Veterans Day weekend, several Army buddies and the wives go up to Bryson City and ride the train into Dillsboro. We get a cabin overlooking the lake and have a good weekend playing cards and cooking and drinking beer!

Yeah, that would cause me to leave pretty quick...

Don't know about the rest of you, but usually on Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and the 4th the last thing I feel like doing is going to the hardware store.

I'd put "going to an overcrowded chain restaurant" lower on the list than that... it's a long weekend, and a good time to knock out projects - especially if I can take some off the cost of an expensive one.
