Awesomeness was enjoyed today at my first match. Nope, not me, but the whole experience!

Actually, I think I was awesome for actually going out and doing this! I watched and I learned. I went slow (see scores), but that was my plan. I didn't screw up anything majorly.

My shooting was a mixed bag. A very few bursts of newbie "brilliance" mixed in with a bunch of suckiness. Lol. But I'm learning.

My 1911 9mm, on the other hand, was only semi-awesome, as it was up to its old tricks, but it's ok. We made it thru with the help of some great people.

I had a great time meeting even more forum members and generally soaking up any advice that came my way. Everyone was very supportive of a new shooter. I believe my instructors would think I did ok.

Millie, if you don't mind me asking , what problem did you experience with your firearm, was it the rock island

Outstanding. That is one big step getting to and actually shooting the first match.

You will only get better at each match from now on.

Yes, I shot the 9mm, and it was extraction issues, which seem to be usual these days. I did get marginally faster at clearing them, I think.

I guess the p238 gets shot next time, as it's been pretty trouble-free over the months I've been shooting it. 2 teeny issues in 7 months is pretty reliable, to me at least.

Congratulations are in order for @Millie actually finding the range solo, because I've been shooting that match three years and Amp still has to tell me where to turn to get there every month.

I don't think anybody has mention it before as a cheap fix that's worth the effort, buy an assortment of Wolff mainsprings/hammersprings and give that a go. A little grease were the hammer meets the firing pin retainer can also be of help. Good luck and way to go on your first effort at the world's best sport.

I'm so glad you made it out. 80% of members on here if not more of the people on here are scared to try it. You have a score card, they have excuses. Most think "matches" are a bunch of John Wick like shooters. There are some really good guys that come but most just come because they love to shoot. What I have noticed is that the Coharie matches have a smaller turn out but it's all good shooters. Next weekend you will see a lot more "New" shooters at H20.

Get rid of the sissy pistols and get yourself a Glock :D:D

The P238 would be good for a BUG match, and you can shoot a BUG gun in a regular match, but if you can figure out a way to shoot a "larger" gun for a regular match like you did yesterday you'll probably be happier. Next weekend's H20 match will be a regular match. Distances are somewhat longer in regular matches (like yesterday) than BUG matches, and sometimes you need to be able to knock down steel to activate moving targets. 380 can do that with a well placed shot, but well placed shots are harder with the short barreled pea-shooters, and 380's "knock down power" on a steel target is less than 9, 40, 45, or 10mm.

Congrats. Nothing like learning to clear malfunctions on the clock. I don't know how close you are to Boone or Wilkesboro, but they (we)run IDPA matches on the 1st and 2nd Saturdays. The 3rd Saturday in Boone is steel challenge, which you can run with a 22. Also, you can shoot 2 guns. Only "down" side is the minimum round count for gun is @140. 6 stage, 4 strings per stage. You get to throw out the slowest. Shooting steel is a lot of fun. You can run PCC, centerfire pistol, or 22's.

I'm always happier with a larger gun, and I'll probably continue with the fussy 9mm for a bit longer, as I'm just trying to learn how to do these events at the moment. Lol.

I would like to see what the .380 can do in an "appropriate" match though, it would be a lot of fun, I'm sure.

Moving targets will be a whole new thing for me....I don't even like it when the paper targets won't settle down at the range! A few lanes have the air blowing really hard. A moving target should make things really interesting for a new shooter, I guess....

Take the .45 I loaned you.
You know I love the .45, but I can only shoot a few magazines before it starts to make my hand hurt.

Maybe my instructor can use it in a match? That way, the gun gets to compete in the hands of someone who can handle it WAY better than I'll ever be able to! Lol.

**I'm sure your .45 would be brilliant in a competition! What do you think of this idea?**

I do plan to shoot the gun some this week, as it's been idle for a bit. It needs a little workout.

I'm near Fayetteville, and you're near the mountains, I think.

I'd love to do a steel challenge, it was mentioned to me in another post, I think. The round count specified for yesterday was 150, I have no idea how many I shot.

And I have gotten to love the sound of the steel, from going to Battery Oaks a couple of times. It's fantastic! Once I get a more reliable vehicle, I'd love to visit you guys "up there".

PS I looked up Boone, 200+ miles/4 hours from me. Maybe in the fall.
