Millie's first match!

It's your till January. Shoot the snot outta it!!! Let anybody you want shoot the snot outta it. Treat it Just like it's yours. it might just end up being yours. IF you shoot it enough.
Thanks for letting me loan out the loaner, I'll ask the coach if he wants to use it in a match!

I promise I'll give it more range time. I've been concentrating a lot on the 9mm and the .380. (Trying to work out the 9mm's problems, and keeping proficient with the Sig, since I carry it daily.)
You looked at the 1911's extractor, right? There seems to be a feeling that this may be my (main) problem. What do you think?

I would be shooting the heck out of it! Good war horse that wants to run.

CD
It does need to be shot more, but I can't do very many magazines before my hand gets tired. Maybe I just have to keep working at it.
Also, the ammo isn't cheap and I have 4 kinds to buy now...lol...that's what I get for being so fascinated with so many guns!

Mentioned long time ago how to cut costs by reloading. Plus you can download the rounds for less recoil. Look at some 185 gr or 200 gr LSWC target loads for less felt recoil.

Congratulations. You are now hopelessly infected. Oh the condition is terminal. But don't worry, it won't kill ya.

Congrats Millie! I would love to have the guts to try this but so intimidated and nervous about trying it.
Good on you!
DO IT!
Trust me, I about pooped myself after I realized I actually did intend to do this!
But once I got there and settled down from getting lost getting there, and met some people, I was fine!

Once you do the first one, you're good to go. I did it, and that means you can do it. You'll learn a lot by watching the great shooters, and you'll do your shooting and learn from that too.

You don't want to miss out on this, and you'll be happy you pushed yourself...I am, and I plan to do the match Saturday too, so there you go.

Nobody cares about your shooting or nervousness....except to try to make you a better shooter and be less nervous! That's the beauty of it! Go and be safe.
That is all.

Yep, I remember. I'll probably get into it at some point, a lot going on at the moment, though. Lol.

Glad to hear that, I like to shoot and can't do that if I die (I assume).

Love the fact that you went out and did this.

LMAO
That's the first time I've actually gotten an "award"
for being an adult!! Maybe I did get to be one, and didn't even realize it.

Congratulations are in order for @Millie actually finding the range solo, because I've been shooting that match three years and Amp still has to tell me where to turn to get there every month.
I did try while lost to get the number for the place from 411, but no luck. Maybe I'll get a number for the next time, because I was lost for a while, and the cursing inside my car was not to be believed! Lol.

I left the house at 5.30, and was there a bit after 8am....it's 75-ish miles....how lost was I.....

And I left my favorite sweater there....maybe they'll hold it for me for next time.

Congrats Millie! I would love to have the guts to try this but so intimidated and nervous about trying it.
Good on you!

Ain't shit to it. I was shooting with a guy who had never shoot a match yesterday. He was nervous as could be. After the first timer went off he smiled like a possum all day. You will be disappointed after every match though.
All you can think about is damn,,when and where is the next one.

Get rid of the sissy pistols and get yourself a Glock :D:D
No, no, no! I can't shoot Glocks well, and I've tried quite a few. They're too light, and make my hand hurt. I'll have to stay with my beloved "sissy pistols"....yay! Lol.

Nice.
Get the gun sorted, much funner without malfunctions.
I think I did get a bit faster figuring the problems out as I went along, though, so I learned from everything. The guys were good about helping me get myself sorted out. The gun might be flawless next time, I never can tell. (Which is why I no longer carry it....)

I don't think anybody has mention it before as a cheap fix that's worth the effort, buy an assortment of Wolff mainsprings/hammersprings and give that a go. A little grease were the hammer meets the firing pin retainer can also be of help. Good luck and way to go on your first effort at the world's best sport.
Never heard any of these terms, I'm assuming they're different form the recoil spring?
I have no idea what a firing pin retainer even is, though I have seen the actual firing pin (I think), at Battery Oaks!
I really know nothing about my guns, do I? That's not good.

Part number 10 is the firing pin stop/retainer.

I'm so glad you made it out. 80% of members on here if not more of the people on here are scared to try it. You have a score card, they have excuses. Most think "matches" are a bunch of John Wick like shooters. There are some really good guys that come but most just come because they love to shoot. What I have noticed is that the Coharie matches have a smaller turn out but it's all good shooters. Next weekend you will see a lot more "New" shooters at H20.
I do have a score card!!
And I cannot tell you how excited I was to get those little pieces of yellow paper yesterday! (Might have to frame those suckers!)
I was afraid I'd do something really bad/stupid/unsafe and get ejected from the match before I even got a shot off! As soon as I fired the first shot, I knew I had "won" everything....it was an amazing moment for me, one I will never forget!
And I got to see some incredibly great shooters do their stuff! Can't get much better than that.

Millie,
See if this image with help with the parts different people talk about.

So would the extractor be #5/4? I'm trying to remember what I saw when I was cleaning the gun the other night.
Thanks for the illustration, guess I need to grab the manual and really have a study session with it, instead of just glancing thru...

LOL, CD and I had the same idea for Millie.
The reloading idea has been suggested a few times, but I'm not sure I'm safe to do that, I'm kind of a klutz. Lol.
But I'm still mulling it over, just like I mulled the competition idea over for many, many months before actually doing it!

On the view I posted, #4 and 5 would be the EJECTOR and pin. The Extractor #6 is located in the slide near the firing pin. The one I posted is for a model with a firing pin safety. Don't know if your pistol has it or not. Suggest you use ronn47 for a Government model.

It's easier than you think. You may not spend less but you can shoot more for the same money.

I learned by watching dad when I was 12 years old. I've loaded thousands of rounds and had some fun doing it. My set up is nothing fancy but it allows me to shoot more. With how much your shooting now reloading is your next step.

We have seen your confidence grow and you continue to impress us. And, You go Girl!!!!!!!

Sounds like you are hooked! Stick with it for 1 year and I promise you will look back and be amazed at how much your shooting will have improved.

Just don't get burned out like I did. Once I started I shot 7 matches in row and stopped going to the range. I'm gonna shoot next weekend because my regular shooting buddies will be there. After that I'm planning on just shooting only one match a month and spend more time on the range and dryfire.

It's getting way too hot out for me to be strolling around with a loaded gun, so probably one or 2 more and my matches are done for the summer.
Not that I won't be at some cheering all you guys and girls on! (If I see any girls, I'll cheer them on.) There's knowledge to be had by me just watching. Maybe even more, because I won't be all caught up in remembering stuff to do and not do, and wondering how long till the 9mm acts up. LOL.
(I'll be hitting the range Tuesday to work out the .45, just in case I want to use it at some match or other! The range trips are like therapy for me, and I won't stop going, because I feel all relaxed after a few hundred rounds have been shot!)

Thanks to you all for the support and encouragement, and especially for urging me to do this!
Y'all were right, I did have a lot of fun and learned a lot...about how the great shooters do stuff, and also about myself....I did it and I got a score sheet!! Woooooooo, as natureboy would say.

There will be more ladies next weekend. The best lady I seen was at a match at Buccaneer. She was pretty damn good.

That is awesome.
I have mentioned to my wife and daughter that they should at least take a few classes that focus on training for competition.
My daughter is a natural. I think she'd do well and enjoy it.

There's a bunch of springs in the auto pistols and the 1911 has it's share. The hammer has a spring that is empowered by the slide coming to the rear and can be a source of a unreliable extraction when the hammer spring impedes the slide's rearward movement. A lighter hammer spring allows a stronger return of the slide and a stronger extraction as well. Wolff springs make a kit of lighter springs that can be switched with the original spring but the process is like Peter robbing Paul, too light a hammer spring can cause misfires, another dilema just as bad as a extraction failure.

As a side thought, no factory ammo is as reliable as carefully assembled reloads and I would never claim fault to any autoloader without first running it with good loads, just a thought.

So maybe I need to find someone with some reloaded/personally loaded 9mm that I should buy and try out?

Next match you attend keep an eye out for the top competitors and question them on their ammo. Good chance one may offer to sell you some of his good stuff, then again they all may be shooting factory stuff, if so, buy what they are running, Good luck.

@Millie

I've shot probably 130 matches over the past three years, and probably had 100 range sessions in between. Probably 3/4's of that time was spent shooting factory 9mm of various quality brass cased brands. I have had one ammo malfunction (case head separation) in all that time that I can recall.

I'll ask if I get a chance, and thanks.

I saw some ammo yesterday with those blue tips....what's that all about?

A lot of guys who reload use them. I'm guessing they don't lead up your barrel or wear it out. The link I listed is at aguy in Holly Springs. His loads supposedly are softer shooting. I can't really tell a difference. I need to go to the one day day with a partner and let them load it vs factory stuff and see if I can fell the difference.
