Minimum motor for towing

The half ton trucks of today are more capable than the 1 tons of 30 years ago. Don't sell them so short.

I understand what you are saying, however if a half ton is as heavy duty as a one ton...the designations have gotten all screwed up. My 98 1 ton is a hell of a lot bigger and heavier than my sons 2018 1/2 ton.

I watched an ad on YouTube for square body Chevrolet trucks that touted the C30's huge GCWR of 16,000 pounds. That's the same as most modern half tons.

Just expressing my experience, everyone has their own.

As a teen I pulled my first race car with a 68 half ton chevy 350 powerglide, manual DRUM brakes and NO trailer brakes. Did it an entire season.

Was it safe? Was it smart? Hell No.
Could I do it? Obviously yes.

You can’t hide money! Lmao

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have spent and spent and spent on that F 350 of mine. Its been deleted, bulletproofed and the whole shebang.... Its left me stranded going out to Missouri, stranded me headed to Lake Waccamaw, and stranded me going to Myrtle Beach. It has a water leak I cant find, mysteriously pings hot, then goes back to normal temp in the time it takes me to get pulled over and start having chest pain. I'm sick of it. I take care of my stuff, and This truck will last me 25 years I hope.

So that is a 6500 lb tractor, 1500 lbs of hanging weight, 3500lb trailer and 500 lbs of tires. That haul with a f250 with v10 was awful with any elevation change (ugh 81 in VA/WVA) . 6.0 in the 350 show was a cakewalk.... When it ran. Plus, It didn't squat wierd, and it would stop. You don't need the DRW though. But the 350 is nice.

Delete and tune it and it will

You missed where he said it was already deleted.

And tuning will not fix random cooling system gremlins. Once head studs and EGR cooler are addressed that engine benefits most from being left alone.

We have a 30 foot travel trailer (tip to tail), the box itself is 27 feet. We're around 7500 lbs fully loaded. I have a 2015 6.7 L F250. I upgraded from a 2014 F150 V8. The difference is more than night and day. We spend a fair amount of time in the mountains. I can barely tell it's back there with the diesel. I would highly recommend a 3/4 ton diesel of your choice for something that size. I'm happy with my Ford and I don't know the other brands well enough to comment.

They way I look at it is that I have the most important things in my life in that truck, wife/daughters, I'm not screwing around going down the highway or a mountain road with 7500 lbs chasing me. My $0.02.

The dodge. I misses nothing

I have this stoopid idea to maybe buy a camper. I haven't got enough truck to tow it now. What is the optimum truck setup to haul this up and down hills without having to get out and push it?

Sit down and add these up:

Trailer cost
New truck cost
Mods to truck
Insurance for truck
Insurance on camper
Gas cost over a car
RV park fees x days on vacation in a decade
Property tax on truck
Property tax on camper
Add 10% on top for maintenance

What’s your number? Did it shock you? Probably close to half the cost of a vacation home without the massive depreciation in value while the house keeps becoming more valuable.

House stays in the same place. the places you can go and see are simply amazing, of course you can tent camp, but everyone has their desired comfort level.

Very good points which are under consideration.

I know the huge trailers with all the comforts of home are popular, but a smaller trailer or popup are easier to tow and much easier to find camping spots for. The latter is particularly true in national parks, where spots for 30' trailers are very limited.

Another bonus, those lower profiles are much easier to store indoors or besides the garage

On the way to the store just now I saw a little Toyota pickup "towing" one about that size. He had a heck of a job getting moving from the light, I had to go round him.
