I am a Smith neophyte having shot mostly Rugers and Rossis over the years. Who can tell me what I should look for in a stainless K frame 64? I have a chance at a like-new early 70s-80s 4" model at a below book value. I really just want a shooter but this may end up a carry gun

Lookieloo pix of my new to me 64 nodash

It is a stainless model 10 basically. They are rock solid and worth every penny of its below book value. They go for 300 for a shooter to 400 ish for a pristine model. Doesn't matter to me, stainless can always be blasted, polished, or just cleaned up.

Havent bought one in a while huh? I haven't seen a smith for $300 in several years. 'Round here anyhow.

I have a 3" round butt 64 that's part of my carry kit. All I can tell you as far as what to look for is to google "revolver checkout"

Can't go wrong with a K frame in .38 Special. You won't be disappointed with it.

Maybe my pricing is a bit low. If you want one for 300 it's sitting at patriot shooting sports in youngsville right now. It's a bit rough but, mothers mag polish and some time will fix that.

Yeah I have a 2012 gun value book and it lists it as between $350-450. This one is priced at $350 with holster in like new condition

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a model 64... except it's not a 65. A while back Probation carried the 65 with round but and 3" barrel, when they finally had to start replacing a few they opted with the 64. They were fine but no one liked the idea of loosing the capacity for .357 mag even if all they ever issued was .38s.

If it's close to new condition for $350, I would be all over it. I mainly look for overall external condition, look at the throat, check the carry up in DA and SA, see how tightly it locks up with the trigger pulled, and check for pushoff. Overall, K frame Smiths are wonderful revolvers.

If you decide against it pass along the info?

For 350 in like new condition you better jump on it or someone here will hold you hostage until you tell us where it is .

It is hard to say without seeing the specific model 64 at issue, but it is difficult to go wrong with a $350 price tag.

On another note… please, please, do not polish it with Mothers. These guns came with a brushed stainless or bead blasted finish. Of course, it is your gun to polish or not polish as you see fit. It is just that polished stainless guns make me sad unless they came that way from the factory.

Enjoy your Model 64.

Incidentally, I have purchased 2 Models 64 in as many weeks. Paid $450 for a 2" 64-4 NY-1 and $375 for a 64 NY-1 4" with box...but that was a steal.

Lol I agree with not polishing. I don't own a single polished stainless revolver but, I just wanna make sure people remember they can always fix stainless.

Put my hands on it finally. 4" tapered barrel no dash. Looks to be in 95% condition and has been fired a few times. Looking up on S&W forums looks like a 1970-1973 gun to me. Needless to say I am definitely going to jump on it.

Serial number is D600xxx

Yup. Your date range is correct. Probably shipped 1973-1974. Those are nice. Look forward to seeing a picture.

I have a 1969 Model 10-6 with the heavy barrel. Hands down, one of the finest shooters I have ever owned. My first Smith was a 1967 Model 10, then a Model 27 that I foolishly traded for a Colt 1911.

You can't do any better than a 4 inch Smith.

Get it lkarus1...that is not a see every day model 64. Most of them were made with the 4" heavy barrel. The tapered "skinny" barrel ones are few and far between around these parts. I've only seen one for sale locally and that 10-12 years ago.

Look Kiddo, if all you ever had was this M64 and a proper amount of .38 spl+P, with the proper training, you'd never want for anything more, weapon wise...This is the kind of weapon that heroes like JFK (carried a blued M10 and awarded the Navy Cross) and Jim Cirillo (NYPDawarded godknowswhat) have carried!!!!! BE THE MAN IN CONTROL OF THE WEAPON, not the guy with the weapon...

Since this thread floated to the top....I'll drop this here. A few Models 64, including a NY-1 and a Brinks gun. Great carry snub, particularly in hot weather.

A k frame snub is definitely in my future and a 3 incher as well.

Seriously this one gun really got me into the casting and lead game hardcore. After all who wants to reload for a bottom feeder and lose all that brass [emoji41]

I've got a few of the 3" as well. Including another NY-1. In fact, I posted one recently in the EDC thread or the Revolver picture thread. Great guns. Glad you are a wheelgun guy now :)
