So I have a mossberg 500 and I want to mount a bayonet lug on it. According to my research, you need a 20 inch barrel and a magazine tube to match to mount a bayonet, kind of like this

Now, mine is an 18.5 inch barrel, like this:

My question is: is there any way to mount a bayonet on an 18.5 inch, or is this impossible? Am I better off starting from scratch?

I think you’d come out way ahead selling the 500 and buying the 590a1 with the bayonet lug. I believe the heavier barrel of the 590 would be more suited to bayonet use than the regular 500 barrel. Not sure if it’s the only reason the 590 has the thick walled barrel, but I bet it was a factor.

The receiver of the 500 and 590 are identical.

You would need the mag tube, and barrel assembly, of a bayonet lug equipped 590 in order for this to work.

The magazine tube of a standard 500 has a threaded socket for the bolt type retention system of the barrel, where as a 590 has a ring that the magazine tube passes through. The bayonet lug is on that ring, and the end cap provides a place for the bayonet ring to mount in lieu of a standard m16 muzzle device.

Also, removal of the orginal mag tube CAN be a bear, as a headsup.

It is possible to convert, but it will not be cost effective. Even if you do the whole front end, you are still left with a "normal" trigger group which is one of the other.main differences between the 500 and the 590.

I looked into this, it was not cost effective and you end up with not quite a 590 at the price of a new 590.

If you're just screwing around, you can get one of the pic rail bayonets and stick it on a rail section on the mag tube of your 500. That's what I did, just for the humor value. It's fairly useless as a fighting tool, but it will cut you when you're dorking around showing your friends.
