Nice.
On the subject of "motivation, one thing I wish people would do is quit using "motivate" and "motivation" as something that's external. Motivation is NOT external...it's INTERNAL. I don't give a cr*p what anybody says about it being internal, because the whole issue with the use of these words has been watered down into namby-pamby, wishy-washy-, touchy-feely bullsh*t. INSPIRATION is external.
What "motivates" a person is internal because motivation is based on a person's core values and belief systems. Therefore your motivation is brought about by your core values and what appeals to them. It's an INTERNAL PROCESS that drives a person to behave the way they do.
If you believe in hard work...then hard work is what you do. If you're not putting out hard work, it's likely because you don't have an external reason to do so, or you have lost the external reason to do so. If you care about children, then nearly everything that has to do with caring about children appeals to you. If you value doing a job well, then all the aspects which go into doing a job well are important to you and grab your attention.
Inspiration is an external factor. Something you see or hear may inspire you to take action, again based on your internal belief system. It may be "divine", it may be "artistic", it may be a drill sergeant pushing you to your known limits and beyond, it may be a cry for help in the night. It may simply be the appreciation one receives for doing what it is you do. But these things are ALL external.
I HATE the terms "motivate" and "motivational speech"...because you CANNOT motivate people who don't already have it in them. You need to INSPIRE them.
I sometimes carry around a 4 foot length of bamboo at work. I once had a Sailor ask me "Is that your motivator?" in jest. I smiled and said "Nope. Motivation is an internal process that drives people to behave the way they do. INSPIRATION, however (raising my bamboo stick)...THAT'S external!"
