Motorcycle love

Started riding late in life (mid 40s)... Had a Honda Shadow 750, then a Kawasaki Concours ZG1000, and now a Yamaha FZ6.

Watched a guy send his over the side of the mountain at deals gap after he passed me on a double yellow line since I wasn't going fast enough for him. There wasn't much left from what we could tell. Rider was beat up but didn't follow the bike over the side of the mountain either, so that's good...
Every time I've been to the Dragon I got passed lol. Me and some guys from work used to go once a year.

Once was enough for me. There's plenty of nicer roads to tour around out there and not have to feel like you're going to be killed every 3.2 seconds

good gosh man, how long does that take?

Well, I've never been 150 miles but I did 102 miles from Lenoir to the top of Grandfather Mtn in 6 hours and 15 minutes. The lead riders did it in 4:45! The last 2 miles were hell

I've got an 87 Goldwing 11,000 miles I'd like to sell if anyone wants a cruiser. Asking $5000.00

I bought it from the original owner he put 7400 miles on it and hurt his back at work was never able to ride again it sat in his garage for 20 years.
Doing the same here, this bike really needs someone that wants to ride it.

I was coming north on I85 in Mt Holly today on my bike. I saw a bike on the side of the road. I hit my flashers and pulled over to see if he needed any help. He looked at me like I was crazy and said, "No, I just stopped to use my phone." WTF! Who stops on the emergency lane to make a phone call? The McAdenville exit was in sight. Moron kid on a slammed and stretched 'Busa.

Wow. Crazy

I've stopped under an overpass before, but only with LOTS of room on the side before the road.

Same.
Got lost out in Wisconsin, stopped under a bridge away from the traffic and pulled up maps (Ive never lived in WI, so it was all new to me!).

My Dad was heading down 485 one day on his Road King and passed a guy on stopped on the shoulder. He gets turned around and looks up and the guy is waving him off like he doesn't need help. Ok...so Dad just goes back down the road. A few minutes later the same guy pulls up besdie him (wearing a club vest) smiles and holds up the lefty he was twisting...

2005 Road King. Bought it new in June 2005, it's at a little over 105,000 miles now. Did a cam change at about 45,000 miles. Also updated to the later style hydraulic cam chain tensioners at that time. Did the 95" big bore with head work by WFO Larry at about 92,000 miles. All the engine work was because I wanted more get up & go, not because it was needed. When Larry had the heads he called me to ask what kind of motor oil I ran because there was zero valve guide wear.

Other goodies include the Supertrapp Supermeg exhaust & a Thundermax ECM. Various other changes also such as upgrades to the lighting, seat, handlebars, front & rear suspension, aftermarket oil cooler, compression releases and a few more chrome bits. What all this means is I've got a motorcycle the way I want it that's paid for and I really don't find myself wanting a new one. The few times in the past that I mentioned taking a demo ride on something like an Ultra Classic to my wife she said "If you have to have all that extra shit ( fairing & radio ) just go get in your car ". She has a point.

This has been as dependable of a vehicle as I've ever had. It still rides and drives great and will absolutely go fast enough to get you in trouble.

Tonight I put the battery tender on my klx140L
Put some fresh premium in the tank
And, for the first time in about two years, fired her up.
And took it for a cruise around the yard and then the neighborhood.

Dang it felt good.

My current and last bike except it now has a Rinehart exhaust system on it. I have been underwhelmed with this bike since the day I brought it home.

This is the bike that I foolishly got rid of to get the current bike. 2004, I bought it new and put 78,000 miles on it. I liked it a lot, I still don't know why I got rid of it.

Here's the wife and I coming down I-81 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia on the way back home after going to Rolling Thunder in Washington, DC. I'm not sure of the year, we went 3 years in a row.

Here is a photo from Laurel Springs, NC. I'm sure that some of you know where this is.

I have owned many other motorcycles over the years, almost every make except for a Kawasaki. I always liked Kawasakis, just never owned one. I've spent 47 years of riding and had some scrapes and beats and bangs but never anything serious. With aches, pains, and stiffness in my joints, it ain't nearly as much fun as it used to be.

2006 XB12 Lightening Long Ss. I am having withdrawals since I haven't ridden her in a couple months.

Though once warm weather gets her she is going to be ridden like a dirty whore

Edit- hmm Photobucket and the site aren't playing nice
Had a 2009 XB12Ss. Loved it. But sold it to fund the build on my Rubicon. And I have degenerative osteoarthritis in my tail bone that made is painful to ride a skinny seat more than 30 minutes.
Next bike has to be a fat seat cruiser.

@Slosolo2 asked that I post this full-size version of my avatar.

The bike is a 2002 BMW R1150GS Adventure. Great, all-around bike.

That pic is probably 15 years old. I sold that bike 12 years ago, thinking I needed something lighter and quicker; hence the bike I could never live up to, the KTM 950 Super Enduro; a superbike for the dirt:

Which I subsequently motarded with some SuperDuke wheels:

The handling with this setup really sucked, so I went back to an all-around setup before selling it:

I had it for 5 years, and 25,000 miles, with no real problems except the standard LC8 issues I knew about going in (fuel pump, water pump seal), and did stuff on it that absolutely should not be done on a 450# bike. KTM's are solid, no matter what you are told by people who have never owned one.

More later.

Photobucket ruined this post.

Crusted on mud after coming east through Glacier National Park during road construction. The HD behind me was heading west. He was not happy with the dirt that was all over my bike. His buddy told him they could take an extra 2 days and go around or he could pull up his panties and ride through the construction. I just about busted a gut when he told his friend that.

I'm glad this thread came back around. I had not seen it.
Really enjoying all the pics of bikes and scenery.
I wanted to share some of the love....

but i can't find the stinkin' thumb drive with all my pics:mad::mad::mad:

My favorite bike of all time, my beater KLR650. Had 44k miles on it at the time of the crash. This pic is from it's last ride, dad and I touring up to Shasta. About 3 hours after this picture was taken dad would be crashing that brand new (~750 miles on it) Tiger 1050 into the back of my stationary KLR. Ouch.

The extra fuel on the KLR is actually for dad's bike. That IMS tank on the KLR held 6.5 gallons and I was getting 55mpg even at altitude with the carb. Seemed like the Triumph's fuel light was always on.

The replacement is a Vstrom650. Super happy with this bike, hasn't left me stranded nearly as many times as the KLR did, but it's got ABS and that's something I won't live without anymore. Only 55k on this bike, but since I changed jobs 4 years ago (and moved to NC) I don't commute on the bike every day like I used to.
I'm most likely picking up a KLR this week. A buddy of mine has a Yamaha dual sport and wants someone to blast around dirt/gravel roads out in western NC with. Haven't ridden in many years but way looking forward to it.

Everything I read/watch about the KLR 650 is perfectly in line with what I want. Yes it's a compromise, excels at nothing but does everything, and at my age I don't need extreme capabilities.

My kind of bike. Hope to see you out there sometime. Prepare yourself for milk crate jokes though.

I think I may have posted this here before but I think it's hilarious, mostly since my bike is the clean one in the back.Muddy KLR sm anon.jpg
