Greetings all.

CWP holder from Georgia moving to WNC/Boone in just a bit over a week. Rather excited (I am a Georgia native, my father is from Macon Co originally). Used to live in Scotland for a few years so I am thrilled to move back into a Highland sort of area.

Owner of a PSA AR-15 and a Taurus TCP 738. I am curious if I can use my GA CWP even after I get a NC state id (Georgia says the CWP is valid even if the holder moves to another state just cannot renew it unless you are a resident). I will be pursuing a NC CWP but with the new job and moving expenses...

Welcome.

Love the Boone/Blowing Rock area. App State alumnus.

Howdy from the not quite those hills!

Your permit should be honored in NC. Welcome aboard.

Welcome to North Carolina and to the forum.

Regarding your CWP - You Will need to change the address just like you do for your drivers license. You may want to call both sheriffs departments, the county you’re moving to and the county you’re moving from and ask about the process. Two years ago I moved (within the state) and I was required to bring something from the county that I moved from. You may not need to do anything. On the other hand if you’re required to bring something, this will save you a trip. I hope this helps

A NC CHP (Concealed Handgun Permit) allows purchase of handguns without a background check (since it is conducted before issuance of the CHP). As I understand it, your GA Permit will not allow you to purchase handguns here in NC. You’d either need a NC CHP or a PPP (Pistol Purchase Permit) for each handgun you purchase. Those are issued by your county’s Sheriff and (at least theoretically) one is surrendered to the seller during each purchase.

Greetings Nicole and welcome to CFF. Happy to have you with us!

Best of luck with the upcoming move.

Welcome to the Great Smokies Redoubt!

Welcome, @Nicole

If I'm not mistaken, once you establish residency in NC, an out of state CHP will not be valid--but I've never done this so don't take me as an expert. Like others have said, a call to the local sheriff's office may do a lot of good. I might even call a few different ones to make their stories all jive with each other. I'm seen some folks who work at the local law dogs give a statement that their face, tone, and words would say "I know this to be 100% fact," when in fact they were 100% wrong.

Welcome. Another ASU grad here. But, I went there when it was a sleepy little mountain town. Things up there sure have changed in the last 35 years!

Welcome to the CFF family. One word of caution...you know how every family has the crazy uncle? Well, we have two of them. Good luck!! :D

Please to see another Lady join up. Welcome !

Welcome @Nicole
How did you hear about us?
Google search :p

Georgia law is that your permit is valid within Georgia for the entirety of the period until expiration, you just cannot renew it if you move out of state. I just didn't know how North Carolina might view that if I held a GA CWP with a NC license.

Considering going to the Watauga Gun Club, although mostly because its the only range in the county.
Looking forward to the cooler summers (I may be a native of the South but I hate me some hot weather). I'm also a history geek and my ancestors all lived in NC from the colonial era until at least the Civil War (like I said Dad is from there, my paternal ancestors were North Carolina Regulators before the Revolution. Mom's family lived in Edgecombe Co out in the east. I wanna go do some exploring at Alamance, Guilford Courthouse and venture down into SC for Cowpens, and the Ninety-Six as well. I'm pretty darn into my Scots-Irish heritage, and WNC seems to be the place to be (plus the hiking...)

Thanks guys.
