I live in the mountains and my cat has come in a few times with a smell on her that is sort of skunky but more musky and I've smelled it walking around on my property a few times. It's fairly strong but not as strong as a skunk. Anyone have an idea what it may be coming from?

On a more serious note, maybe she's hanging around with a mink.

Could it be from a male cat? There was a stray outside our house for a few days, and it smelled like that even after he left. He himself just really stunk, I’m assuming from urine?

And then it could also be a male fox or male groundhog I think.

She may have found something dead and has messed with it.

I've seen a pair of fox here but they are big enough to consider the cat for lunch. Ground hog could be possible - need to do some research and see if they put out that powerful of a stink

Do you have a creek bottom that's growing skunk cabbage? I have it growing in my creek bottom in Laurel Springs.

Probably bigfoot petting your cat. Better invest in a "git stick".
Bigfoot is from out west and it would be truly strange to see one around here. maybe you're thinking about skunk apes, which are known to live around these parts, and would very much explain his problem.
cat nuzzled on a friendly skunk ape. skunk ape petted the cat like that gorilla Koko and her kitten.

Around here it's called Boojum. I do have a replica in my woods.

All that dope you are growing. Get rid of it and the smell will go away!

Bear?

after a bear tore down our bird feeder,
that musky/skunky smell hung around
until it rained.
