I bought it in 2000 and it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. 25 Years under the SC sun took it’s toll. The paint was down to the primer. The passenger door and bedside had been hit twice in the same spot. The rubber gaskets on the trim was crumbling and the front bumper was starting to come off. Various other small cosmetic issues as well.
I told the body guy I wanted it to look like new. I knew the cost would be more than the truck was worth on the market but it was worth it to me. Took 4 weeks and 15 grand. I paid cash. I’m happy. My baby only has to last as long as I do.

Beautiful. That trucks better than any new truck. So happy to see people keep these rolling. I have a 2005 my son has a 2004 and I hate i ever sold my 2001.

GMT 800 platform for the win.

Looks great, I have a 99 2 door Tahoe and the Colorado sun has done similar things including cracking the dash. I’m debating on fixing the cosmetic issues since mechanically it is sound but $15k for paint is tough to swallow. It might be time to let it go…

It wasn’t just paint. He had strip it completely down to bare metal first. He replaced the damaged door and repaired the damaged bed side. Replaced the front bumper including new headlights and turn signals, Replaced the trim, removed, cleaned and painted the step bars that had old road tar splatter and replaced the broken window sun shields. He even cleaned and polished my rims. It was a complete restoration. I think I got my money’s worth. Besides, he’s an old cold war veteran like me.

It will be similar for me minus trim and wheels but will add new glass and seals. Dents and dings with a couple small rust spots.

It does look great and having a vehicle in great shape you can work on yourself is definitely a plus especially with the push towards electric. I replaced the alternator on mine and was driving it over the weekend and it still drives nice. I’m really torn as we have had this since 2010, bought it when we lived in NC.

My biggest concern was preventing it from rusting. But I figured as long I was gonna spend the money I might as well go for broke. Which I damn near am now!
