My M998

I would love to see you drive that beast thru say downtown Chapel Hill, Asheville or such and watch the granola heads explode!

Is it the original diesel or did you swap in a gasser?

Swapping a gas engine into one of those ought to be a crime.

It is all original. 1988 M998 6.2 diesel 3 speed auto with 17k miles.
17k? That’s not even broke in yet. I doubt that one ever made it off base much less out of the country. Have you taken it out on the highway yet? If I remember right it’s maybe righthand lane only 70mph held to the floor but over 5,000 lbs of beast with the gearing in that 3 speed was a chore on that 6.2L but 35-45mph those things didn’t break a sweat.

The couple swaps I helped with included a GMC 4L80 4 speeds (I cant remember the exact engines) and their streetable speed went up to maybe 85 or so but the engine wasn’t being run hard once the OD kicked in. The worst thing was it was maybe a 2 day drivetrain swap BUT the electronics that had to go in took way more time and headaches if you hadn’t done it before.

It was a National Guard Unit and fully Motor Pool Rebuilt including paint in 2000. What's interesting is at one time it was up-armored but not sure of what roles it played in its past. Many times you can never be 100% sure on mileage because they swapped parts including speedo during repairs. I tend to lean this one is accurate mileage because of the overall condition. 55 MPH is about the max you want to push the 6.2 3 speed. I just got it to tool around town, car shows, hunting, historical collectible, scaring liberals, etc. I have driven exactly 100 miles with it since I bought it and it runs like a sewing machine. The 6.5 with 4-speed OD is the more desirable and can run up to 70 mph and 55 is comfortable for the engine. However, that comes with a pretty big cost to buy one with that setup. The 6.5 Turbo is even more expensive ($50k and up) depending on the overall condition. I still have a few minor things to do to it but other than that it was in excellent condition. Some dumb a$$ mounted the directional tires on wrong so I have to get those swapped around this week. I want to keep it as authentic as possible and stock. I hate when people take these and do Rhino paint, jeep bucket seats, center consoles with stereos, LED bar lights, etc. They try to make it more like the H1 but cant really afford an H1. This one was WAAAY to nice to do that too.

That looks great, really nice condition! Mounting ANY gun up top will make liberal heads explode, so I’d definitely do it purely for entertainment!

I’ve seen some with a duramax swap, that seems like the ticket for something that’s more practical on the street.

I've never seen one so clean.......
Thanks!! It started out in really nice overall condition but we (my 13yo son and I) spent time cleaning, touching up paint, new seat pads, all new decals, etc. Because of it nice condition from the start I want to preserve it "as is". It was too nice to start molesting it with jeep seats, Rhino liner paint, aftermarket wheels, and a center console with a stereo system. I felt like this one deserved to be preserved.

It started life like this when I got it. I now have a new cargo cover. The big quest now is sourcing nice doors.
