So, I had actually been toying with buying a .308 rifle for long range shooting and perhaps even hunting for a while. I’ve also been meaning to buy a garage chest freezer for a while now too. With all the recent runs in the grocery store, having a freeze full of deer meat and/or pork sounds pretty good at the moment.

Also, why not buy a new gun, right? That’s always fun. I’ve got my AR and CCW situation very well squared away. The last few guns I’ve bought have been purely for fun.

Here’s what I decided upon after doing a bit of research:

I
choose the 7mm-08 versus .308 due to ammo availability in a panic and also it seems like a very good round for what I’d potentially be using it for. Also, choose this model as it seems to have everything you’d need straight out of the box, plus I’m a fan of Vortex optics.

I have no idea when I’ll be able to get out to sight it in, but am looking forward to getting into another genre of shooting.

Great choice...my Tikka 7-‘08 w/vintage Leupold vari-Xll 2-7 compact is my go-to on opening day. By far my favorite round! My .270, 0’-6, . 308 and 300WSM and other ‘uber-boomers’are orphans since I discovered this fantastic round. It does everything I need and more without punishing my arthritic shoulders. Compact , light, great on a stalk or in a stand and accurate across the board with a variety of factory fodder that reloading has never been a necessity.
In my mind the ideal southern whitetail round!!

Is this you? https://ronspomeroutdoors.com/blog/7mm-08-defeats-308/

My Sako looks like this with a Leupold VXIII on top.

No that’s not me but thanks for sharing...great article with a lot of concrete info to back up his premise and I for one agree with most of it. Being a retired design engineer, numbers, empirical data and personal experience impress me more than random anecdotal occurrences. From a strictly ballistic standpoint, the numbers don’t lie. As someone once said “ You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.”
That being said, the 7-‘08 /.260/.308 debate comes down to personal choice much like the Ford/Chevy/MoPar argument.
Truth be told at the ranges most folks encounter here in the south (myself included) any of the three can/would do
the job quite nicely.

Yup, the data is why I waited for the Sako 7-08 came out instead of just getting a 308. If the 6.5 Creedmore was out at the time I probably would have gone that route.
