He drove to Piedmont Aviation at Smith Reynolds from Liberty University today to take his FAA Written. He texted this to me after he arrived. It’s a Mil Mi-17 Soviet era helicopter.

He saw it sitting out there when he pulled up. He said he got out and started approaching the gate intercom so he could get entry so as to take his test. He already knew what type of helicopter it was as soon as he saw it.

He noticed several of these guys wearing normal civilian clothes walking around inside the gate, some were eating, and they were dressed in cargo pants and Merrill shoes and some had kind of long hair and beards.

One of these guys approached him and this was their conversation:

“He saw me standing at the gate waiting to go in and he walked up to me and asked if it was locked. I told him it was locked and he chuckled and said “alright I’m with the helicopter over there. We’re gonna go over to the FBO then.” And walked away”

Lol. Who knows who those guys were or their mission. My son sent me this as well:

As the saying goes..... In plain sight.

Yep. Hardly anyone would notice something like that at the airport. My son is extremely observant and possesses quite a bit of knowledge concerning identification of aircraft.

He told me that when he was talking to that guy at the gate, it was like he was talking to Dusty from the Medal of Honor game series. Lol.

A Hind correct? Or am I confusing Red Dawn info?

Wolverines!!!!!
I was thinking Hind also, but Hip comes to mind too...
Doesn't the Hind have the weapons pods on the winglets?

I don’t think the chopper in my pics posted above are of a Mi-24 Hind.

Pretty sure that’s a Mi-17 Hip. But I’m no expert.

However, if my son said it’s a Mi-17, I’ll take his word for it. Lol.

My strange encounter today was a VERY low speed, nose up, fly over from a Blue Angel F/A-18 Hornet. It's not often that you get to see the TOP of the fuselage on a fighter jet from your front porch. He was just creeping in the air. The Hickory Aviation Museum got one delivered about 12:30 and it's going into their collection.

I read he buzzed Linville Gorge at least once before landing.

Coolest encounter was back in Spring , late 1970s. Buddies and i were camping up in the Porcupine Mountains in the UP Michigan. Sitting on the shore of Lake Superior, one evening drinking schnapps, enjoying the sunset. All of a sudden, low over the tree tops comes a B-52 followed by 3 fighter jets (f-16s?). they were slowly skimming the trees tops and before I could get my camera out of my case - boom, they were gone.

The Blues have upped their game now that they’ve got the Super Hornet. Their demonstrations will be a bit louder at the shows.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

May be one of these. Tail number yields no info.
