Hey! I recently got a semi-beater vehicle for my parents (thanks @type44 !) - a 1995 grand Cherokee. They transferred the plate off their old car (2001 Acura). The Acura plate was scheduled to be renewed 04-2018, so I expected that to be come the next inspection date for the Jeep. The Jeep originally had an inspection due date of 05-2018.
When they transferred the plate, the inspection due date is now 04-*2019*!
I'm not complaining about waiting longer for next inspection, but I'm curious... Does anyone know why it got extended out more than a year? I couldn't find anything online about NC inspection duration changing.
Thanks!

Similar situation, I bought a beater last year. When I got a new tag for it, it didn't require inspection because the current one from the previous owner wasn't due yet. The new inspection date matches the renewal date of the tage, so I got a free year.

I didn't know they done that.

The states are stealing from the tax payers on inspecting new cars in my opinion. A new car shouldn't be inspected for at least 5 years. Then every 2 years is a plenty for inspection.

Be thankful. When you buy a new car, the hidden cost is 3 months from the time you get that "T" sticker on that shiny new tag. Full 3% Highly Useless Tax to be paid or no sticker for you!

We just transferred a tag from my son's wrecked car to his replacement, and the same thing. They gave us til May which is sooo generous. Eff NC.

Soon 90 counties will not have emissions.

The inspection thing has been that way for many years.

OK… I started thinking about this some more, and called my parents and told them to check the sticker on their license plate. The registration card definitely says it doesn't expire until 04-2019, but the plate sticker expires 04-2018. I had only seen the registration card. So looks like the DMV screwed it up, rather than giving us a really nice extension. :(

When they get the renewal sometime around February next year, go online to DMV...

https://edmv.ncdot.gov/VehicleRegistration/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=/VehicleRegistration

and see if it will let them pay the property taxes and renewal fee to renew. If it completes the renewal, then an inspection is probably not required, because if it is, the website won't let them renew without it.

That's how it is when you transfer tags now. I transferred tags in my truck. When the renewal came due. I didn't even think about it and had the inspection done. When I got to DMV I handed the lady the inspection paperwork. She informed me I didn't need one till I renewed the NEXT time.

Now I think this is only if the new car is purchased from a dealer.

In 2016 I registered two cars that my sister gifted to me, they were recently inspected in NJ and were good until this year.

The cross state line thing seems to have that impact. I bought one from SC a few years ago and the same thing. And SC doesn't even do inspections if I recall correctly.

happens a lot...you usually get 12 months on a newly titled vehicle that was already on the road (ie had current inspection). Maybe they did it since the plate "was inspected"!

1995 and back is the way to go in Wake county (safety only inspection due to the OBDI computers).

35 years and older require NO inspection at all.

Thanks for all the discussion guys. I think it makes sense now that we have discussed it – the plate has to be renewed next year, but I probably won't have to get it inspected for that renewal. That is nice
