I'm in the process of buying a camper from a NC resident. I'm in SC. He has the title.

We agreed on a price and a day to pick it up. He asked what payment method we would be using. We said whichever he preferred, whether he wanted cash or a bank check, although I would just as soon pay him cash.

His response left me scratching my head. He said he could transfer at the bank (I guess he thinks we're taking out a loan) and also get the title signed and notarized while we're there.

My question to the collective of NC camper-owning residents on this here forum is, does your signed title become the bill of sale for your camper, like it does in SC? And if so, are you guys having them notarized? I am having trouble remembering the last notarized title transfer between a private party and myself.

Meeting at your bank or his? Maybe he has a lien and they have the title?

He just said, "the bank." Plus, he has the title.

I haven't responded yet because I think he's assuming we're borrowing the money and it would just be convenient for him to receive the proceeds and get the title signed and notarized there. Wherever "there" is.

If he owns outright and has the title, then he’ll fill it out to you as the seller and the bank will notarize it then and there. That becomes your title and bill of sale.

But we're not borrowing the money. Maybe it was my mistake including the term "bank check" in my response.

If I would have said money order, maybe he would want to meet at the post office.

He is more than likely meeting at the bank for the notary service

You should have bought mine. I'm easy. :D

Is that just for peace of mind? Like I mentioned earlier, I bout can't remember the last time I had a title notarized when buying or selling anything private party.

A camper is titled like an automobile. You have to have the sellers name notorized with buyers name filled in. Meet where ever your notary is located.

Peace of mind, no hassles at the dmv for you, deal set in stone, no backsies.

Take your pick

The "have to" is what I'm having trouble with. Is it really a requirement or just for feels?

When I bought my camper, the signatures weren't notarized. The seller signed the rifle and handed it off to me. When I sold that same camper, I signed the title and gave it to the buyer, without using a notary.

If the guy wants to meet at a notary, that's fine. I just know I hadn't dealt with getting something notarized in so long, I just assumed it wasn't a thing anymore.

Hmm. Looks like a trip to the SC DMV's website is in order.

Edit: Now I see why I haven't been hassled. I see no notary requirement for SC.

In NC titles must be notarized before being taken to the dmv. Some people have friends that are notaries that will stamp it without the other party present but some folks don’t. In that case the easiest thing to do is meet at a bank and get both signatures notarized at the same time. If SC doesn’t require it he should be able to just sign the title and you handle the rest on your end.
