I just got in a neck sizing die for 204 and 6.5 CM. When to setup the 6.5 CM (Hornady) and could not get it to size. I think that I followed the instructions but it is not working.
I pushed a case up into the press then screwed down the die until there was some resistance (without the depriming spindle). The turned the die down until the the shoulder setback changed by .001 but at that point it crushed the case.
When I get back out there I am going to take the die apart again and clean them the use some Hornady spray lube on them.

Any ideas where I am screwing up?

What diameter sizing bushing are you using? Is it ocrrect for the case wall thickness and bullet diameter minus 1.5 to 2.0 thousandths?

Charlie, they are fixed neck size from Hornady. I use Hornady FL dies with out any problems. I just do not want to over work the 6.5 and 204 Ruger brass.

I called Hornady and RCBS today to talk about setting up the neck sizing dies.

I have one for a 6.5 CM (Hornady) and 204 Ruger (RCBS).

Hornady said to put a piece of brass in the press and extended the ram. Screw down the die until it makes contact with the brass. At that point work the die down a little until the neck is completely sized.
RCBS said to raise the ram with a shell holder and screw down the die until it touches the shell holder. Lower the ram and turn the die about a 1/4 of a turn to get a cam-over (like you do with their FL dies). She said doing it this way there is no way to crush the neck.

It RCBS is correct, all my neck sizing dies in the future will be RCBS.

My $0.02
Measure the shoulder on at least 3 fired cases for that gun, screw the FL die down to push the shoulder back a couple thousands and you’ll be GTG. If the neck isn’t tight enough/too loose, have a FL custom die made.

PV, I have set the FL dies where they are suppose to be. Mainly with the 204 brass which is a little more expensive to get, I did not want to over work the brass using a FL die everytime. When neck sizing a 308 you can tell that you are not working the case that much.
