I am thinking of building a cage of some kind inside my house that i can open the door and put my gear in it and leave it there, the door would be big maybe 3-4 feet wide? Basically like a locker of sorts. I was thinking something simple like fencing. I saw a TV show where the SEALs walked in and they had a little fenced room where they dropped their gear. That is what i am thinking, but a smaller scale. I want to be able to drop my bags and gear and have my ammo there, but i don't want a wall necessarily. Just something that secures the stuff until i put it up in a gun safe or secure enough to leave it in the bags. I was thinking something about 6 feet wide and 2-3 foot deep. Maybe build heavy duty shelves from ground to ceiling. Fencing would be fast and easy but my wife is going to complain about the look i think, so i am looking for other suggestions. Anyone have any ideas?

take down the inside walls of a closet, line it with chicken wire or something similar (1" welded wire, etc), then put your drywall back up over it. Get a real wooden door with a deadbolt instead of a handle. 3" screws into a stud for your strikeplate. Put in a peephole. Done.

Old house and has no closets in the room i have designated for this. It will have to be something i build.

I suggest building a closet then. You can compromise form and function by building walls with extra layers of sheathing for security but with finish surfaces of standard drywall. You won't have to add much to equal the level of security you would get from a chain link enclosure. The big challenge there is finding a door that doesn't look too out of place in your house.

ETA: It could pull double duty as a safe room:

See if any Sears closing near you are selling fixtures, what you are talking about sounds a lot like the security cages for high value goods they have in back
