So I bought an old original tasco Japanese mfg 6x18x40 scope. Was mounted on a 1972 browning 30-06 that was fired very very little. Now I know next to nothing about a variable scope of that magnification. HELP!!!!

Once I get it mounted I should get a better grasp on how to use it.

Go to 100 yard range. Dial the parallax down to the lowest setting and get behind the rifle..move your head around and you'll see retcile move. Slowly dial the parallax, it's correct when the reticle doesn't move. Think of red dot and how when you move your head the dot remains on target.

And do that at whichever distance I'm shooting? Be it 100 300 400yds.

Yes. You don't have to move your head alot. A little head movement goes a long way. I seen a guy turn his head 2 inches either way trying to adjust parallax.. You can do it in your back yard depending on your scope. The numbers on the side are reference but close enough (if your parallax is mark)

That's really the only thing about variable to know. At higher magnification the image will appear dark in some cases but not all. If your see mirage on a hot day, dial the magnification down.

One thing to add: it's better to have little to no parallax than a crystal clear sight picture.

If you have to choose between the two, sacrifice the clarity.
