Looking for ideas on a design or method of carrying my spare saw chains into the woods. I almost always carry two saws, and each saw has two chains.
I cannot just coil them up.
Just Not happening. I dont have the time or patience to play cats in the cradle with saw chains.

I was thinking a bi-fold case or tool roll style method might work.
Some of them are 24", so I may need to fold then over.
Open to all ideas. I've not found anything available commercially.

Remember those spring loaded plastic snelled hook holders for fishing?
One of those would be sweet if it was covered or in a bi-fold design.

How about an old VHS tape box. DVD box Or hook them on a carabiner and carry them into the woods

I should clarify, when I say "carry them" I mean in a pickup, quad or tractor.
Not physically hooked to me or in a backpack.

I cringe when my razor sharp cutters smack on metal. The VHS box is no bueno.
I'm trying to keep them protected, straight and organized.
I carry my various bars and tools in a toolbox, but the chains are easily damaged so I'm searching for a solution.

Wonder if you could drop them into a piece of 1” PVC, caps on both ends. Or maybe 3/4 sched 80?

No idea whether this would work...

Cut PVC pipe of the proper diameter to 3 or 4 inches longer than the chain. Drill small holes thru the pipe near both ends. Drop the chain down into the pipe and secure it in place with a nail thru the hole on each end. If you’re concerned that the nails won’t stay in place, use machine screws with nuts on each end.

Waddya think?

I wad mine up and they are stored
In an old 1970s sandwich Tupperware container with a couple dollops of old motor oil.

Drill a hole across the pipe ( under the cap lips to capture the pin ) and run a pin across to hang the chain in the pipe.

Ryan, I use a small range bag. The spare chains go in the inside pockets, and it has room for a scrench, quart of pre-mix and bar oil.

This what you said you didn't want but I use plastic Tupperware type container from some deck screws I used. I fold them neatly and stash them in there. Small and compact. I haven't had any issues so far.

I like the PVC pipe idea. For me it would be too long for my action packer I carry all my saw stuff in.

I lay the chain out on a shop rag, fold the rag over the chain, they fold chain that extended past rag onto rag, fold rag over that, then fold that and it will fit in the plastic box the chain came in. No trying to de-tangle the chain as the rag keeps it from tangling.
