I haven’t cut my own grass for a while but am looking to start it this year. I used to have an older Deere mower with those hydrostatic drives but am looking for a zero turn style mower.

Any tips to look for on used mowers? Or even best places to buy quality, used mowers?

I’m thinking about one of those stand up Hustler style zero turns since my lawn is really flat.

Scag then Hustler.
I second this advice with the addition that the small engine repair shops/new equipment dealers usually run great sales late Feb - March time frame so wait until then to buy. You can usually get a few hundred off plus an extra year warranty at least.

And a lot of those sales often include 0 down and 0% apr.

That's a big part of why I settled on Ferris when I bought. Got way more mower than I wanted, but I'm thrilled to have it and it turns out I needed it.

Troll your local Home Depot or Lowe's... Or make nice with them and find returns or units that had to be serviced. I snagged a Ariens Ikon 52-in ZTM for $1500, brand new except it wouldn't start when Lowe's took it out of the crate.... They replaced the solenoid and had to mark it as used.

Mow from the porch - RC style.

Scag does make a great mower, but you pay dearly for them. Heard Ferris is the crème of the crop although with your yard being flat you probably wouldn’t need the suspension it’s known for. You might even see my Scag in the classifieds soon as I’m considering selling it to help fund a start up of my own.

I bought a very nice low hour ex-mark for a real deal.
If I went to buy new it would be ex-mark.

There a couple equipment actions local to Charlotte that always have several, both new and used.

I ran about all the brands mentioned here and for a high-end mower for yards buy SNAPPER. They are mid-range priced in the zero turn market and are very reliable.

I would vote scag, hustlerZ, ex-mark was good I'm not as sure currently, gravely and walker were all good when I was working on them. I believe husqvarna makes one, and I am normally on board but I'd check the motor they use. Most important things to look at IMO is engine manufacture, Kohler and kawasaki are the best.
If you're local to the Triad you can PM me and I could potentially help you source one.

I’m on my second bobcat zero turn. First one I had 10 years and put 3500 hours on with nothing more than standard maintenance. The one I have now is 10 years old but only has 600 hours on it. Amazing the difference in accumulated hours once you’re not mowing commercially anymore. Though I’m afraid I’m about to get back into the game.

I have over 20 years on my Scag Turf Tiger, and it's still going strong. I figure that it's the last mower that I'll ever have to buy.

As I recall, Ex-mark is the commercial division of Toro.

The nice thing about the true commercial mowers (Scag, Ex-Mark, Hustler, etc), is that they are relatively easy to work on, not complicated with a lot of gimicks and parts are readily available from a lot of sources.
