There are probably a 100 threads like this one but things change if you guys would humor me a little...

I have built ARs but not a pistol. I have a few questions. (Nor do I own one) PERFECT time to start a build...(sarcasm) I'll most likely be forever upside down on this one.

I picked up an SBA3, Anderson lower, Hogue pistol grip and a lower parts kit (minus trigger group)

My thoughts are 10.5" 5.56 for this build. I think that is a good staple and later on I would like to pick up a PC charger and maybe do a 300 BO build.

I like something like this and like the price even more. Does anyone have any experience with Davison Defense. I've obviously purchased from them, I get their emails constantly. I also saw a very comparable upper at Palmetto.

I want something that runs but I don't need Noveske price or quality.

I'll finish the lower out first and research/shop uppers. I appreciate any advice offered.

Just ordered a PSA drop in trigger and MP trigger guard. I need a buffer spring/buffer and an end plate to complete the lower.

I gave up on building because I wanted flawless function. I bought a Springfield 7.5" Edge 5.56 and it performs flawlessly.

I have never built one of any size, I paid for piece of mind given the climate!

Just $0.02 from an old fat man!

I won't go any shorter than 11.5 inches barrel length on a build in 5.56. If I remember correctly, an 11.5 inch barrels gas system is the same as a carbine/M4 length set-up

IMVHO - I wanted shorter in the event of required maneuvering inside a vehicle.

Why no shorter than 11.5"? You have to qualify that statement please.

I wanted shorter for in vehicle and even in house. My house is a fun house with rooms and no real hallways.

Lower is built except trigger group and trigger guard which are both on order.

Under 11.5 velocity falls off FAST, and I'd rather have the extra inch. And the original XM177 had a 10 inch barrel and wasn't reliable, the XM177E1 settled on 11.5 and it worked.

I have rooms, as well, but no real hallways, I also carry my AR pistol as my truck gun, and from working it in my truck, the extra inch of barrel doesn't make much difference

Haven't ran any of the Davidson stuff, though I've looked hard at it. I do have two 7.5 AR pistols, one is a factory upper on a factory built lower, runs great. The other is a Combat Armory build kit, that I put together myself, and built the lower myself, and it runs great, steel case or brass. Whenever Combat Armory gets the 10.5 back in stock, I'll get me a couple of those. I also have a 16 inch CA that runs flawlessly. I love their stuff, and it's crazy affordable.

Any length AR can be built to run...

Based on ballistic info, I prefer 10.3" min for anything not a range toy, but I do have a 7.5" as well. Never had an issue with it. They are fine at hallway distance, but just about may as well be a 22lr much beyond that.

My usual suspects are a 10.3" carbine and an 11.5" middy that's a dedicated suppressor host(even though it functions fine without the can).

I haven't heard of that brand. I think the magic number for drop off is actually 10.3 per Daniel defense, but there are plenty of fun things to do with shorter if that's what you want. I've seen Hickok45 shoot a beretta pico 380 and hit steel at 75 yards. I'm betting the shorter ARs would perform better than that pico for that application.

I went PSA for mine. SBA3 is definitely must have so good thing you started there.

Ugh, I just noticed one of the roll pin holes for the trigger guard on my Anderson lower isn't drilled out... sigh...

Be careful! Don't drill it out... It's probably threaded. Remember, one end of the trigger guard has pins on a spring (or a roll pin). The other end has a threaded screw, if I remember correctly.

It's not meant to be drilled out. It's threaded for a little screw...

Screw? Every one I have ever made had a little detent bead you pushed in and another you pushed in to flip the guard forward. There is only a roll pin in the back.

It's been a few years since I assembled a forged lower... I'm probably wrong.

The important thing is: Don't drill out that hole. Hahaha

Yep, threaded! MAGPUL Enhanced Trigger Guard...View attachment 243564

Ah, never installed those. I'm a bare bones guy that doesn't have Polish sausage fingers, so all my shiz is mil-spec.

Also, it's just one spring loaded nipple. I dated a girl with a similar issue; one was an innie, the other an outie.

I once dated a girl with two innie nips. It didn't last long. It was me, not her. I just couldn't get over the look of em...

OK OK, Thankyou for saving me from myself. LOL

It's been a few years since I built one. I forgot about that.

This made me laugh, thanks guys.

What's the scoop on Moriarti Armaments (sp) ?
Same as Davidson or mo' better?

Nevermind, reading some majorly bad reviews now...sigh

Good article, thank you. Printed out to finish reading tonight. It brought up something I'd not thought of in a while. Few years back I traded into some .223 ammo in I believe it was 40 grain. I've never fired any of it. Anyone have any idea how 40 gr. would work in a 7.5" barrel, besides increasing velocity? Whether decrease in weight would decrease energy more than velocity increases energy? Muzzle energy/Distance Energy/Terminal Energy/Etc/Etc....Is there such a thing as a degree in ballistics...ha?

Short AR pistol for SD? IMO, go for the 300BLK. Better energy from a stubby barrel.
I can easily point 9:00 sitting in the driver's seat with my 8.5" BLK. And it fits nicely in a common tool bag.

For me, I want to avoid adding a new caliber to my current reserve- thus my questions about Moriarti and Davidson. And my want ad... already have a 308 pistol in the works and trying to get "there" faster adding a x39 pistol (there= rifle caliber pistol in the truck).

Yes, a 300 BO is in the future plan when things calm down. I also want a Ruger PC charger at some point. I really don't want to add another caliber but a 300BO in a short barrel with a Can is quite appealing. I don't have any NFA items at this point and as soon as I get over being on a list and the money... It took me quite a few years to take my tin foil hat off and do CCW.
