All right gents,

Been thinking about it for awhile and I am looking to start hunting.
I have never been hunting before nor do I know anyone who hunts. I have never had venison either.

I would like to hunt with my suppressed MK18 pistol, is that enough? Or must the barrel be longer? Is there some sort of special ammunition I should use?
I know I need to take a hunter's ed course and wear an orange hat, that's the extent of my knowledge so far. Pathetic, I know.

I am located in eastern Johnston County.

Any advice, tips, or guidance is welcome.

Thanks!

Welcome to an addiction that’s “almost” as bad as guns!

I was fortunate to grow up in a hunting “community” of sorts. First day of deer season was almost like a holiday.

As for your firearm choice, some say the .223/5.56 isn’t enough gun, but shot placement is more important. I’d try a heavier grain bullet if what you have will shoot it well. No caliber restrictions or anything in NC

Aside from that, you got someone local to serve as a “mentor” of sorts?

And if you want to try venison, I’m always happy to share, just make the trip down east!

Learning to process/package your own is half the fun. I’d also take a look at some videos on dressing/butchering. Nothing like getting your first one and then being like “now what?”

You didn’t say what species you were targeting. Deer season officially goes through Jan 1 but the rut is about over; you probably won’t be able to get your license before then anyway.

But squirrel season goes for another couple of months. Johnston County and a further east has a good population of boar. And come spring, it’s turkey time.

Here’s a couple of great web sites:

Sounds good, I go to Lejeune monthly so I am nearby!

I do not have a mentor unfortunately.

I would say deer primarily but open to others.
Will have to check out those websites, thank you.

If you want something to make hunting fun and be able to pull a trigger, get into squirrel hunting and work your way towards deer. You can also look into joining a deer club next season and there’d be guys there who could help teach you. Public land is hard to hunt but doable if you put the work in on it.

As far as Deer, I would say the hunt starts way before the season starts, without your weapon. Think about it like this. You are a hitman trying to take out the mark. What do most hitmans do? They do their homework. You need to know where the mark eat, where they sleep, what their schedule is like. You should already know where they are by the time season opener comes around. Or if you are just born lucky. Just walk out and tag and bag.
