New project: a “true” .22 AR pistol

With the recent ATF decision I kinda felt like I should revisit this project. I would consider turning it into a SBR but not as a dedicated .22, and I would want a slightly longer barrel and some kind of handguard for a 5.56.

I got a very cheap 8” barrel and I started looking at the pile of parts. I think I kinda have a plan. Kinda…



First I found a cool barrel nut for the stubby. I shaved the teeth off but forgot to take another picture.



Anyway, here’s the plan. Pistol gas tube with carbine handguard. Make a custom retainer that will be held on by a home made “flash can”. Kinda like this:

I started making some “proof of concept” parts out of Delrin.
I also ordered a 1/2-28 tap and die set.

Nice build. I use delrin too, good stuff. My MP5/AR45 uses the vortex flash hider as a jam nut to hold on the front sight tower against a step in the barrel..

I missed the deadline for the tax free tax stamp so that project kinda died as I don’t think it’s worth being a dedicated SBR.

I messed with some stuff that was lying around today.



Meh, I don’t know. As a true pistol it’s better with the super stubby, 22 only barrel.

As an SBR I would want a flash can if I ever fired 5.56 out of it.
