I've got a Frankengun 9mm 16" PCC that takes Colt Mags that I bought off of Gunbroker a while back. I really like it. I've sold my Ruger PCC and the K-USA carbine. Looking to buy/build a back up. I've got 1 Glock 33 rounder, and 3 ETS mags left over from the Ruger. Don't currently own a Glock of any flavor. With all that being said, I'm trying to decide if I could live without LRBO on the backup. The blem PSA is $599 right now. To build or buy a Glock mag Mike Foxtrot or the like would be @$700. To buy or build a Colt mag version would be @$750-800.

Given all the above, what are your recommendations? Logic?

Thanks,

GregB

Echoing @BigWaylon above, having a backup in the same caliber with different magazines might not be desirable. Instead, consider a regular AR lower and a Colt magazine adapter block. Then you can pop a different buffer in the tube when changing uppers and have a multi cal backup.

I did this with Foxtrot Mike upper on a run of the mill standard AR lower using a Stern Defense adapter block. I've standardized on Beretta 92 magazines between several guns. Works great and I have LRBHO.

For just the PCC itself, not talking into effect trying to use the same mags for different platforms, the Colt version is hands down better. The dual feed mags are the ultimate in reliability while the Glocks unfortunately feed more like what they are; actual pistol mags in a PCC rather than dedicated PCC mags. Also, the Colt version allows you to use some of the best mags on the market in the all-steel (including follower) Colt branded 32 and 20 round or the OEM for them Metalform. I know there are those that love their Glock fed PCC's but I've seen many a failure vs only a handful from my Colt. Hubs was issued one of these for many years back in the '80-90's and swears by them. Just my two cents . 👍

I just ordered a Stribog myself. They had some issues but the new mags have fix it. But I also don't like the AR system or the Ruger so i am a bit limited. And I don't want to spend 1k or more

Thanks for the input 9mm subgirl. Ironically, the guy who had the most trouble at the last match was running a Rock River AR with Colt Mags. He was a new shooter though and I have a feeling the issue was either ammo or the rifle, as he had problems with multiple mags.

I've looked at the Stribog, the Kriss Vector, and the Scorpion, and even the Extar. Like them all, LOL. The Kriss and Stribog are pricey. Scorpion is almost as expensive, especially after you do the "necessary" upgrades IMHO (trigger & safety). I worry that the Extar is too inexpensive and "cheap" to be durable/reliable long term (although the 500 round test posted here has me wondering).

My Frankengun has been super reliable with ASC and promags for like 4 or 5 matches and @200 rounds of practice/sight in. Just bought a Colt Mag at my LGS for $40 and a couple more ASC 32 rounders at PSA in Charleston this weekend (@$17 each). Had to limit myself to 2.

Did I mention, I like the PSA ARV as well.....

B&T GHM9 or APC9 with the glock lower. Buy once, cry once. They have all the features you want out of the box and don't need any upgrading.

Is this gun primarily for matches and range?
If so, glock mag AR9 or MPX. For the price: glock lower. Any of the subgun style pcc's are less than ideal for that use for numerous reasons. Capacity is important for PCC's. Glock mags are easy for this.

Seen them all fail: glock/Colt/etc.
JP has been most reliable of all the carbines I have seen. But spendy. I'm sure somebody has seen those break too!

If just a plinker, best value is scorpion. Just my opinion.

It will be my backup (or may become primary) match gun. I'm leaning toward buying something totally different for variety sake, as I'm a middle of the road (at best) three gunner. The B&T is waay out of my ballpark as is the JP. My high end would be a Kriss Vector or Stribo probably.

Ever consider a CX4?

@NKD said it all.

With your price range I’d go with a CZ scorpion.

I just got my first MPX a few weeks ago. Ran great but it’s speedy and somewhat hard to come by at MSRP.

Gibbs Arms make really nice Glock receiver sets which are also side charging.

There’s also a B&T GHM9 posted in the for sale section here. -My current favorite

I currently have all of these and recommend each one. Let send me a message if you want to see some pictures for references.

Take a look at the AK-V. That is easily the most fun gun I have to shoot. It takes Scorpion mags although the PSA made version are even better and cheaper.

As for the CX4, it's just doesn't "speak" to me. That and I think I want to stick with the magwell in front of the trigger, instead of in the grip. I had a Kalashnikov USA KP9 carbine, which I really liked, until I shot the AR9. The AK-V looks pretty much like a pistol version of the carbine I sold. Scorpion isn't out of the running, but the @$1K price tag and the horrible factory trigger and annoying safety put me off.

I’ve got 3 9mm Heinz 57 Frankenguns that all run Glock mags, and they all run like a spanked donkey…..all manners of ammo brands, bullet weights, types, etc..
16”, 10.5”, and 7” barrels, respectively. They’ve all got the heavy 9mm buffers, and good quality BCG components.

I still want to build a 10mm AR. I truly believe 1800+ FPS is totally doable with a 165gr JHP out of a 16” barrel.

Glad to hear that the Glock mag guns do run. The ones I see at the local three gun matches almost always seem to run. I'm torn on which way to go.

10 mm is way cool out of a PCC. @ 15-20 years ago when we were shooting side matches (rifle and shotgun) after every IDPA match in Boone and Wilkes, there was a guy who had a 10MM olympic arms carbine. The size of the holes in the paper targets always made me smile.

I would LOVE to find an Oly 10!!
