Next thing to sell out from CoronaVirus Panic...

But.... do they have a generator?

My local Lowes does. Don't know about the people buying the deep freezers. I've got 2 portable generators. Bought 16 gallons of ethanol free gas a couple of days ago. If it's not needed elsewhere it will go in the lawn mowers for grass cutting season.

I’ve got one that will run most of the house (TroyBilt 7800W) and a smaller one (2200W?) w a Subaru engine. Main panel hookup for the big one.

Just got another 11 gals of non-ethanol today, makes about 17 on hand.

next thing to sell out: vacation rentals?
my sister, who lives in the Boone "area", says the snowbirds are migrating North earlier than usual.

I was thinking about this today. All these people working from home will all have to use their vacation time from May (June?) on. Those who traditionally used it during spring break won’t be. The wildcard is whether kids have to go to school all summer to make up for this time.

And the shelves in food lion are getting bare. No eggs, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and other items. Limit of 2 packs on hamburger. Meat guy actually to one back out of the wife’s cart. Things are looking grim.

I've been working in the Charleston SC area since the first week of January.

Three of us ride down in a work truck on Monday morning and we usually leave no later than noon on Fridays.

A large portion of that weekly transit takes place on I-95.

We were preparing to leave a little early this past Friday (03/20), around 11am or so when we pulled out. Our supervisor who was staying down there for the weekend made a statement meant to encourage us (the trip is a pain, but we do get paid for ride time) that at least the traffic would be a lot lighter this time.

I assumed he was right and hadn't even thought about it. It kinda did cheer me up as we were loading the truck. After all, the traffic around Charleston "proper" had been reduced over the past week or so by probably 50% or more. Not as much where we actually work. We have to commute from the West Ashley area over to Ravenel/Jericho area on Hwy 17. I think there are maybe more trades type folks in that area and less work from home folks. But even out there we'd seen traffic reduced by probably a third or so.

Well, turns out the supervisor's notion was wrong.

Highway 95 going north was the busiest I have seen it in the 3.5 months I have been working there.

Southbound looked pretty sparse. But northbound was packed.

The amount of RVs going north was staggering. And they kind of tend to disrupt the flow anyway.

We stopped at a Burger King for lunch. Drive-thru only. Ate in the truck sitting in the parking lot.

We have a "favorite" rest stop that we like to hit about 20 minutes north of Santee lake. We were gonna stop there after eating lunch.

When it came into view we abandoned that notion. It was a madhouse. All parking spots were full. The RVs were all on the car side instead of the truck side and there was an actual traffic jam of folks trying to get out and back onto the highway. We could see people out of their cars yelling at each other at the choke point style merge lane.

Lots of the rest stops appeared to be much the same. It was probably worse since it was just after lunch. I bet lots of folks bought drive-thru food but of course couldn't use the restroom facilities at those establishments.

We ended up stopping at a big TA truck stop. I wouldn't describe it as calm but it certainly wasn't as frantic as the rest stops appeared to be.

The mood inside was really weird though. I described it to my wife as feeling like I was in some crappy "made for tv" Stephen King movie. It felt like everyone in there was forcing themselves to stay calm. Like if one person had simply started running down an aisle that the whole place would have erupted.

I know I should probably not judge the "state of the union" by behavior on I-95. It can look like a sewer of humanity on any random Tuesday.

But I was very relieved to get home and have no plans to return for the foreseeable future.

It'll come back.
Trucks take time to get to the stores
With people panic buying it's making the shelves more bare.

Ive seen the shelves restocked over the past week, it's coming, people are just freaking out and buying whatever they can.

If we all chill out and get what we need for a week and a half or so and not for the next three year we'll be ok

I think the empty shelves is being caused by panic buying and folks having to eat at home more due to restaurants closing. It will take a little time for people to adjust.

I just asked my wife to order me an instant read meat thermometer. She went off on me about her not working right now and I was all like, bitch, I'm cooking every night! I'm not trying to die from undercooked meat.

I had to put it on my credit card.

Be nice to your wife! LOL.

(But that was funny stuff, anyway.)

PS: be nice to your wife, dude!!! lol.

Just tell her it is a lot cheaper than the guns and ammo you just ordered. I have a Thermopop and Javelin that both work well and didn’t cost very much.

Can still get to go and delivery

Got an email this morning that Uber Eats is doing free delivery over 25 dollar orders
Pretty awesome ...but they arent in my area

I do, but I've never thought to use it in coffee. I don't like honey in general, but desperation changes things.
Consider making mead. Seriously. We’ve got bees coming soon. I hope they’re productive and give us honey.

@thrillhill I sympathize with your remote / commute situation. I spent 3 years, looking at 4 winters going back and forth to Richmond, VA and in our travel trailer. The remote work thing, sucks.

you ought to see the commissaries on Bragg...both of them are a mess; even during the hurricanes they were never gutted like they are now...even the dog food was gone at north post when I was in there yesterday...I did score a box of little Debbie swiss cake rolls
I deliver to both of the Commissaries, I bring all of the Cookies and Crackers from Nabisco. South side was looking worse than North from what my orders looked like.

Was reminded yesterday that if the grocery stores around you are out of paper products, Lowes and Home Depot carry paper towels and stuff. So there is always that.
Office depot and office max carry TP

So considering meats's gone off the shelves, when do I need to start camping out in our cow fields with a rifle and NVG's looking for cattle rustlers?

I hope it's not time yet, but I would definitely make a good tour of your fields, daily t least!

There are people buying this stuff that don't even know how to cook... Half of the fresh produce will rot before they ever use it, and the meat will sit in the freezer until next year when they throw it out because they didn't wrap it properly and it will freezer burn.

too add to my post above about vacation rentals:

In a special called meeting on Monday morning, the Swain County Board of Commissioners
unanimously adopted a supplement to the State of Emergency declared last week.
The new measure calls for all hotels, motels, inns, rentals, campgrounds, etc.,
to close to short-term rentals as of Tuesday, March 24 at noon.

I stopped in at wally world last night. Canned food has been hit hard, but there was plenty of pork & beans if you like those. There was a decent selection of meat out, but not much hamburger. Plenty of pork. I suppose yanks don't eat that.

ALL paper products sold out. Paper towels, TP, paper/foam plates, paper/foam cups, napkins, plastic cutlery. Whats up with that? People stopped washing their dishes all the sudden?

All of the large packages of premium cheese was sold. Store brand was in stock, but not a block of extra sharp Cabot to be had. Friends don't let friends eat store brand cheese.

They had bread, just not a lot of it. All of the cheap eggs had been bought. Cage free organic looked untouched. Those are what I eat, so looks like I'm ok for now.

I saw several guys standing in line at the gun counter. Looks like walmart had less than half the guns on the shelf that they had last week. Looked like most of the centerfire rifles and shotguns were sold. I didn't get close enough to check out their ammo selection.

I saw a lot of people picking over the cold medicine, but I didn't get close enough to see what they were after.

Panic buying drives me crazy, because in reality, there's no real interruption to the supply, and people are still using as much as they did before. A rumor gets started that a shortage as coming, and people run off the cliff like lemmings to create the very shortage that they fear. Most of the people hoarding TP and paper plates aren't doing it out of need, they're doing it because they saw someone else do it.

A friend and I were wondering the other day, just who was the first one to grab all the TP they could grab, and who saw them do it....and so began the rush on TP. In these anxious times, we get a laugh from picturing it....it calms her down.

A side note to toilet paper as pointed out to me by my wife ... women require toilet paper more than men ... men just need to shake.

I’m worried she laying the groundwork so she can start rationing my son’s and myself’s use of toilet paper for only one call per day ... I can she her counting out the sheets and stay “NO MORE TWO PLY FOR YOU!” :D

That’s nice because my wife’s friend was planning on having her bachelorette party in Asheville and my wife was concerned about being on the hook for an Airbnb or trying to find a way to use it. This should give an easy out to refund/reschedule.

You nailed it man, it's ridiculous.
Ive been saying for a bit, just chill out, get what you need and if everyone did it for just a day or so then the shelves would be full again.
Ive seen it, they ARE getting restocked, but people are flipping out.

Anyway, I went to Food Lion in Welcome yesterday,
They DID have some paper towels, only single rolls and not many, but I was surprised to see it.
Meats were scarce (fresh), and not a lot of prepackaged stuff either.

One of my ex-brothers-in-law used to say to his wife and kids, three squares only!

9 meals from anarchy...

maybe in other countries. I’m still 9 meals from my target weight. Even then, at least another 10% fat to burn before I start cannibalizing delicious BBQed southern folk.

im definitely 9 rolls of TP away from anarchy though

The whole TP thing is going to be like 22LR back in '16 for a while. We don't have any "new poopers" and I doubt people are pooping more than before, so all the hoarding will keep the shelves empty which means when it comes in stock everyone will buy everything they can even if they don't need it, then the shelves are empty... rinse and repeat.

Unlike 22 though, when you're sitting on 1000s of rolls of TP at some point you probably stop. probably.

Nailed it. I’m still sitting on buttload (pun intended) of .22LR that I’ll never consume.

TP is way more useful.

consumer pockets will limit at some point. Forget the stats, but it’s something crazy like “average individual (or household?) only has 5k or less in savings”.

So if that be the case, it becomes a war of financial attrition. I can certainly afford to buy more of my future needs today than the “average” according to those figures. The panic hoarding must be hurting at this point. I expect it to ease up soon.

I would hate to know I'm paying interest on TP.

Stopped in local grocery store last night. Only thing in meat counter was four beef tongues and a whole brisket at $115, little bit of chicken, no paper anything, no bread. Picked up a case of canned dogfood, some oranges and got out.
