Hello all, my name is Chris, and I’m a disabled combat veteran living in the Piedmont Triad area. Now I know the title of this thread is a little different for an “introduce yourself” forum, so I’ll sadly explain why I opened that way.

This has been a difficult year at my house. I apologize about the sob story, but it has been a bit rough. This summer, after cleaning up a flood, we had to put in a new hot water heater. Then we got the wonderful opportunity to change our electrical panel, because it couldn’t handle the new hot water heater, (even though it was the same size as the old one.) But, seeing as my house almost burned down (twice!), yeah, the electrical panel got changed/upgraded. Next, while labeling the new electrical box, we discovered that the AC wasn’t working, so we ended up getting a whole new HVAC system. That all put us over about $20k in repairs, out of our pockets, draining āall of our savings, plus some …And finally (well, as of yet it’s finally), two trees fall on my roof during a freak storm. At least the insurance is covering that one.

Now that brings me to the worst part of the story. Seeing as I have PTSD from my time in Iraq and Kosovo, I haven’t been hunting in a couple of years. So not having a reason to use most of my guns, I had them put in a safe place (not a safe though) in my basement, and haven’t messed with them for quite a while. Well, I haven’t messed with them. Someone else did though. They obviously messed with them right out of my house. Now with all the work we had done this summer, plus we had a contractor building a bedroom in our basement, there were obviously to many times when people were in and out of the basement without me there.

I had always known I needed a safe, so it was a hard lesson to learn when I found all of my long guns gone, plus a Ruger Blackhawk .44 mag, that I got in Alaska when I was 16 (30ish years ago). A lot of these were heirloom pieces, at least to me they were, so I think I’m understandably sick about it all.

Nice introduction I know, and I got here upon recommendation by my brother, who had found some rifles in the classifieds. I have decided that I want to actually participate though, and not just be lurking around the classifieds with no posts to my credit.

Now, I am pretty sure that this is too long for a lot of people to read, but for those who make it all the way here, I thank you, but I have a query that I am hoping someone can direct me to where the best place to put theeèp The question is; “if you had to start over with just one rifle caliber, and the time to buy is now, but the budget isn’t the greatest (due to my summer of love described above, as well as the fact that it is Christmas money that I will be tapping into as well.) which caliber rifle, which model of whichever manufacturer, would you chose to go with?” So, if anyone can point me in the direction of where to post that question, or series of them, it will be most kindly appreciated.

Thank you, and I’m mì sorry for the novella,
Chria

Welcome

Welcome, Chris. Man, you've been through it...

I would say something in .308; Mossberg ATR or Savage 110. The mossberg is lower on the scale but mine performs as well as my Remington 700.

The savage is a step up. Either with a moderately priced scope will serve you well.

@chrsmac,

Welcome to the CFF family!

I’d start a thread in the Long Guns section…not in one of the subforums for specific models.

Welcome Chris! Sounds like you have a lot going on and a first hand understanding of adversity.
This is a great community and "brotherhood" with lots of folk able and willing to help with whatever you might need.
Get involved, stay connected, contribute and you'll reap a lot of benefits.
As others have said, head over to the rifle long gun area and start a thread with your questions and comments.

man... sorry about all that rough luck. probability says that eventually your luck will turn around.
Welcome to the forum
I may also vote for .308, which is funny because i only have 1 308 out of ... a lot of rifles.
Use it for hunting to save money on meat. use it for home defense. it will still be too expensive to use it for target practice and fun... but you can probably pick up a cheap 22 somewhere along the way to help with that.

Welcome, Chris.

As to your question on starting over with a new rifle:

You're on a tight budget. You've got PTSD issues which you've limited your hunting over. You lost all your guns to theft.

Buy a decent .22 LR caliber rifle. Prices can vary from very affordable for a good rifle all the way to OMG! Perfect for plinking and small game/varmint hunting. And for someone with PTSD issues which limits their hunting, it's a rifle with virtually no recoil to speak of and very much on the lower end of the noise scale.

Welcome!
I'm fairly new to this forum as well but I'm finding that it's a very good community. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here.
And thank you for your service.

Welcome to the CFF family from the shores of Kerr Lake, Vance County, NC. I'm on the bandwagon with getting a 22 or a 308.A great 22 is a Mod 60 Marlin. I bought one in almost new condition for less than $100.you can get a decent Remington 700 in 308 for a lot less than you would think. Check your local pawn shops and gun shops for deals on lightly used guns. No need to spend your money on new guns when a used rifle will fill your needs.

Welcome.

As to which caliber, I would go with .308 and supplement with a .22 LR, which is much cheaper and quiter. I have been told that the ballistics of a .22 are very similar to the .308 once you adjust for the distances. Consequently, proficiency with the .22 will translate into proficiency with .308 saving you some ammo money.

I’ve noticed several of you stated to get a 22, and I wholeheartedly agree. That’s one of the tree minimal long guns I think most hunters should have. A 22, a deer rifle, and a pump or semi-auto shotgun.

And it’s funny that you mention a Marlin Model 60, as that was one of the rifles that grew feet. I do still have a lot of ammo for the 22, so it’s definitely on my short list for replacements. If I can find something during deer season I will probably go with a larger caliber first. I am really considering a 243, just for the ability of my kids being able to use it once they get ready to shoot a larger than 22 round. (Ironically, I’ve got a brother that is, I believe, wholeheartedly against a 243!)

Hello from Raleigh, you're going to like it here on CFF.

Howdy Chris, welcome from Alamance County!
To answer your question: .308 Bolt gun or an AR of some sort.
Each can be found below $500.

Welcome!

It really is hard to recommend without knowing what you want to do with it. That said, it is hard to beat a .22 rifle, such as a Ruger 10/22, in the bang-for-the-buck category.

Welcome and thanks for joining up with us here. We're hoping you'll find this site to be the very best internet hangout ever. Please reach out to others you know to join up with us here also.

And thanks for posting inside this section so we can extend a CFF welcome and get to know you!
